Nils - Auger jumps when cutting

Got_Ice

Question

I'm starting to think I should have stayed with my jiffy. When cutting the auger either bogs down or the blade jumps around. I have the new center point cutting head and use amsoil saber oil. Any ideas that might help. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

I sounds like dull blades, or blades out of pitch. You can have the sharpest blades int he world if its out of pitch and the auger wont go anywhere(all brands).

Usually when blades get out of pitch, it the operators fault. The biggest mistake many people make is to slam their auger onto the surface of the ice to try to keep the auger from walking when you start to drill a hole.

I am in the same boat as you. My nils is not performing even remotely close to the discription. I did talk with JP and he said the new power point heads have been a problem. He thinks wrong pitch and that causes bog, wobble, and jump. He is sending me a standard cutting head with no power point to see if thats the problem. If that is the problem than he will send out the new power point heads when the new batch comes in. I hear ya on wishing you would have stuck with your jiffy. I sold my strikemaster hoping that this change would be an upgrade. I sure hope it ends up to be an upgrade. confused.gif I have heard only good thing about nils before this. grin.gif

Jeff:

Got back from South Dakota fishing trip tonight and I am now expieriencing the same problem with the auger jumping all over the place, and bogging to a stall. I don't get it. mad.gif JP sent me a new cutting head and it cut wonderful for about 75 holes and now I couldn't use it for half of this last outing. Frankly I am getting pretty ticked. I too am thinking I should have stuck with American made strikemaster. All I know is I am at the point now that I simply must have gotten a lemon. I am calling JP Monday and asking for an entire new unit. Quess we will see what happens. This kind of product failure can't be good for Nil's or FM. They have been working with me so far, but geez, we are gonna run out of winter pretty soon. LOL Doug

No resoulution yet. I went and got a 2hp Jiffy STX and so far it works great. Waiting for a new cutting head but I think it has more to do with the engine right now. I called a local Tanaka dealer to get it in and they were supposed to have someone call me back but that didn't happen. I fish 3 times a week and need an auger that will cut without the frustration of it bogging down and hopping around on the ice. I hope someday the Nils will perform since its much lighter than any other auger but right now I wish I didn't invest in one. Hope you have some luck with JP. Post your results. Good Luck, Jeff

North Dakota is the same. Ice is made for Jiffy's. I always say ND has dirty ice. That is pretty much the same for SD. I fish the Jamestown Res. with all the farming and fields around and with our light breezes grin.gif it blows the dirt of the fields and onto the lakes. With a chipper style blade like a jiffy it is pretty much uneffected by the dirt on the ice but with shaver blades style machines it will dull the blades rather quickly. So I agree with cold one sd on this. Jiffy's are good augers to own when fishing the waters in SD and ND.
