Chubby Darter size

All around size for 'eyes go with the CD5S, but early ice this year I did go bigger with the CD6S, and had a few walleyes crush the thing.. Such as the one in my avatar. Both will work, but for everyday ice fishing use on the 'eyes, I would stick with the CD5S...

I bought a chubby darter last year, but didn't use it much as I didn't have any confidence in it. I am sold on it this year as I have picked up a few walleyes. I rip it up about 4 - 5 ft and let it settle back down and they hit it hard. WOW!

When the fish are on the bite... no bait necessary... Just work this bait with a lift drop hold sequence and give it a bit of a quiver after it has settled on the drop, and it should seal the deal on active fish.

But in those cases where it seems the fish are neutral or off, yes, a minnow head on the middle treble can react more strikes!!

For URL crappies... you can't go wrong with the Luminescent Orange Dace, a glow Chubby... Great for the night bite or the dingier water there... A perch pattern would probably work well too...

For walleyes, Gold Metallic Orange... Perch Patterns (Hot Perch has been working well for me), Copper Gold, and the Luminescent Orange Dace.

I love the small Darter for sunnies, just take off the back treble and clip on a Hali dropper chain with a little glow tear drop tipped with a wax worm and away you go! My buddy thought I was nuts when I threw one of these christmas trees down the hole for the first time.

I carried a few in my tackle box for a couple years until I tried one on a SoDak lake last winter when nothing else worked. I used the smallest size in perch color. I fished it without bait and the Walleyes were slamming it rather than pecking as they did everything else. Unfortunately, most of the fish were under the size limit, but still fun to catch. The name still throws me. If you walked up to some woman and said,"Hey,wanna see my Chubby Darter," you'd most likely get slapped. grin.gif
