i have all the equipment, so i was wondering with the price of shiners during the winter, if anyone kept and bread minnows. i was in blue ribbon bait on century and they have a real nice set-up. there's nothing better that watching your fish investment double and than triple.

I don't know of anyone that actually breeds shinners.

What I have found it is hard keeping the water temp where it needs to be. As to not kill the minnows on the spot when they hit the ice water. (Chillers are not cheap)

The water needs to be highly oxygenated. Also ammonia and nitrate levels raise very quickly with lots of minnows so anymore then 10 minnows per gallon and you may need to have a mechcanism in place just to handle ammonia and nitrates.

make sure you have plenty of fresh water and high oxygenation if you are going to keep a lot of minnows. It is amazing how much ammonia gets into the water after holding a bunch of minnows in a tank.

you would need a chiller, and tough luck breeding them anyway in captivity.
