01zr800

Question

I went out to start my boat for the first time this season and upon starting it I noticed that it wasn't pumping water and it did when I fogged it last fall. I have never had this problem before so I am lost what can I do before taking it in to have it checked? It is a early 80's mrec 200 searies 20hp tiller.

OK took my garden hose with sprayer on it and sprayed a jet stream of water in the outlet hose the water eventualy came out of the infeed on the bottom of the lower unit. How do you replace the impeller? Thanks for all the help so far.

Maybe call your local merc dealer and ask them. We had one that had a thermostat. Every spring we'd fire that thing up and I would swear that engine was going to blow then all of the sudden out would come the water. I would take it in and see if they can hook a thermometer up to it and let it run. I never thought that small of an engine would have one. Just a thought but always better safe than sorry. Having an impeller replaced is much cheaper than a new head!!!!!

If you need to replace the impellor (water pump) you may want a marine mechanic to do it. Had mine done on an 1980 Merc. 7-1/2HP,
the lower unit needed to be pulled off to get to it. Most boat dealers won't work on a motor that old. I found a guy in Blaine that works out of his garage to do it. He specializes in older Merc. and Mariners, does good work, nice guy. Reply to this post if you want his number, I could email it to you.
