A group of my buddies and I have gone on anual fishing trip on opener for years. Since all of these trips have been a great time, we want to go on a ice fishing trip. I'm pretty knowledgable when it comes to open water fishing. But, i have not made any real ice fishing "trips". I was hopin that someone could give me some locations that me buddies and i could camp out for a few days and do some fishing with some portables. We would be using snowmobiles to lug the gear around if needed.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time

A bunch of us use to go the the east side of Rainey lake with our sleds. There are a bunch of great crappie spots over there that are accessible only by sled and the fishing can be fantastic. Some of the spots were 20 - 30 miles apart so you can get some good sledding time while traversing from point to point. Forum rules state that I cannot post the name of the lodge we stayed at however on the Rainey lake forum there is a guy, Fishmiester, that could give you more than enough information to get started. If a Canadian trip isn't out of the question I would suggest you talk to him.

Cummins13- Welcome to FishingMinnesota!

So you are an experience winter camper are you? If all your buddies are experienced, I'd take a hike into the BWCA if I were you and get yourself on an area where not a lot of traffic will bother you.

Granted you can do a lot of camping out on the ice at the bigger lakes i.e Mille Lacs, Winnie, LOTW BUT I don't think you'd get much enjoyment of trucks, vans, cars driving by you all the time.

There are lots of outfitters up on the trails (Echo and Gunflint) that can get you in the right direction for a BWCA trip.

If you don't mind the traffic and looking for something closer, than BDR hit the nail on the head.

GOOD LUCK!

i would recomend taking a trip up the gunflint trail. there are many great opps for snowmobiling, camping, snowshoeing, and many different species of fish to go after. I made a couple trips last year targeting mainly splake, but this year we're gonna go after lakers and some big eyes. your options are limitless up there and there are plenty of lakes inside and outside of the BWCA area that will make your trip a great one.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Everyone here seems to be very helpful. I have never been into the Boundary Waters during the winter. Been up there quite a few times during the summer. My personal favorite is way up in the quetico. Lots of good camping memories up there. Would love to take a winter trip up there.
