Help the Newbie Lowrance Green Box Easy Question - Las Vegas

Dear fellow fisherman:

I just bought an HSOList special Lowrance fish-Low-K-tor flasher for our annual Ely (Nevada) ice fishing $10,000 tagged trout fishing derby thing. I put fresh batteries in it, stuck the transponder in my little 2'deep desert pond in my back yard & turned it it on. The bat meter reads full, the unit flashes once when I flick it on, then no more flashes. Does not matter how i turn the dials. The motor & flasher bulbspins nicey. Is this normal? Do I need reel (pun, i meant real)water. I bought it as is. Did I buy an anchor for my canoe?

Thanks - Vince- & Happy Thanksgiving

Greatwest, It would hurt to try deeper water. Maybe those older units need more water to work. If it does work then it may have a bad transducer.

Somebody else may have had one these locators and know some of the better workings.

Thanks for the responses! Coldone - yes I get flashes all over

with the wool sweater. Do you think i need deeper water for it to work properly? Does it need water to give a reading? The bulb is spinning so I do not think it needs motor brushes if those are the brushes you are talking about. I'll try it out as soon as I find a lake out here in the desert. Maybe I'll sneak out to the Treasure Island pond on the strip. Thanks again any info is appreciated

Even without water you should get a solid mark at "0" ft. That's what led me to the brush idea if you're not getting that. Dwefintely check it out in deeper water if you have some available.

Also check the batteries for good contact. The green box was prone to issues with the batery contact boards as the 6 volt batteries were prone to leakage as they got old.
