outboard shifting

Question

I have a new boat with a 115 Yamaha. I took it out for the first time and it seemed to shift hard. My previous boat was a tiller so I really don't know what is normal. It seemed to make a lot of noise shifting out of neutral if I did it slowly, but wasnt bad if I made the shift quicker. Have other people with this motor noticed a difference in noise when shifting slowly or quickly?

Like posted above it needs to be put in gear rather quickly. Also being new and everything is tight things may have to break in a little. Are you letting it idle down before you put it in gear or does it seem to be idling high?

Thanks for the replies and I always let it idle down before shifting. With the technology today, it just seemed to be a little rough. But must be normal if others are experiencing the same noise.

With that size of motor they all need to be put in gear rather quickly there is alot
of power there. And to shift slow will cause premature wear on the gears.
