CrappieJohn
All I do is remove the side cover very carefully and check to be sure that all washers and such have a place to go back to. On new reels, they generally just shoot a blob of lube in the housing and assume that use will spread it around. I use a toothpick and a paper towel to get rid of the big masses and that's all I do. When I am ready to replace the sidecover I put a half dozen drops of Hot Sauce on the shaft and where the gears mesh. I put a drop on the point where the handle goes into the sidecover, replace the cover and the handle. Once together again I check for operation of all functions and spin the handle like crazy a few times to spread the Sauce. This Hot Sauce is dynamite stuff. Gander or Fleet Farm....Sportsmans Warehouse too....they all will have it. A little goes a very long way and that 6 or 7 buck investment will probably do about fifty reel treatments. augernaut
The Frabill Sub-Zero lube is very good stuff as well - have not tried the Quantum Hot Sauce....I usually pick out as much grease as I can, but I know that some guys will pour boiling hot water into the gears to wash all the grease out - I plan on trying that this year... Mr.Perch
If you are going to put water in there use distilled water and you will not have the gunk bildup that tap water will cause over time
