Evening Vs. Morning

Recommended Posts

I usally only get out in the stand in the afternoon (deer). I'd like to try getting out in the morning...do they tend to come through the same areas in the morning as they do at night? Is there a different type of spot to consider in the morning? I'm on a trail leading into a large field from dense woods. It's good getting the deer traveling to the field for thier night time activities, but would you expect them to be traveling in the opposite direction(going back into the woods) in the morning?

I would say they do quite often it's just a matter of whether you can get there in the morning without bumping into them. If you have to cross a hayfield quite often they'll be bedded in it. By far my best morning spot for archery has a been hunting over acorns. They generally stop in there are their way back from the fields to go to bed.

If you have a sneaky access back into the woods and you get there early enough you'll have a great chance at scoring. This is when I have harvested my two biggest bucks. It was early in the season before the rut. They come roaming by about an hour after sunrise. This was at two different stand sites but they were large fields, my stand located 150 yds or so on a couple of trails that join together and go out to the field. Stay in the stand a while there usually is a little spurt of activity about an hour or two after the sun comes up.

You also have to consider the wind. I have some stands on the edge of a woods where I'll hunt them in the evening with a N-NW wind, in the morning I'll hunt them with a S-SW wind. If the wind isn't right, I don't hunt them.

Also, early in the season, I think deer will bed just about anywhere, then as the pheasant hunters run them out of the grass and sloughs, and the crops go out, they'll move into the more classic bedding areas, woods and brush.

If I had to choose, it would be morning hunting. I love sitting there in the semi-dark, its slowly getting light, you're wondering whether that black lump is a deer, pheasants are crowing, watching the sunrise - I love it.
