I have a 1956 Johnson, I think it's a 9.5hp and I don't move it, but I did make a mark once I got it dialed in just in case it got bumped I could just move it back where it was. I would just leave it in the middle till you get a chance to put it on a boat.

We've got an older ('50's) Johnson with the same lever on it. Here's what I did to figure it out.

Once you've got it in the water and running, try adjusting it in one direction or the other, see how it affects the way that the engine runs. You should notice some small changes in the way it sounds. Leaner will usually give you better gas milage, less top end speed. Richer will lower the gas milage, but give you more top end speed. It's basically just a way to adjust how much gas the motor is using.

Experiment with it until you feel that you've found the best of both worlds, and then like the previous post stated, mark your spot in case it gets bumped somehow.

Good luck. Hope this helps! grin.gif
