Now thats Musky fishing...

Some days I just can’t figure out what makes muskies tick, or what drives me to go through the mental anguish of chasing them. I fished Mille Lacs Wednesday night; all day Thursday, for four hours on Friday afternoon, then drove back to the Metro Friday night. I spent thirteen hours on a Metro lake and not one fish in the boat, not even a solid strike with a few lazy follows. Sunday I go out at the normal 3:30 AM on the same lake as the day before and by 10:00 AM we have put three fish in the boat, lost one at boat side and have two blow up on top waters baits along with almost twenty follows. From 10am to 3pm we never seen another fish? Who in the heck is messing with the musky switch that turns them on and off? confused.gif I can’t remember who said it on the forums but the statement was perfect “Musky fishing is practice in frustration”

Who else saw a mini-rampage Sunday morning? Weather, sun/moon or just plain dumb luck?

Wow!! Quite the day Jon!! I'd say action is heating up, but not quite like that for us "common folk"!

Was on north metro water Sat AM, netted a mid 40s fish for my buddy. Saw her and threw a jerkbait back, and she turned and burned on it in a hurry!!! If only they all were that aggressive!!

Mille Lacs has been tough this year, can't make anything work.....not even seeing the fish in my usual "milk run" spots.

Sounds like a killer day on the water, I thought yesterday morning seemed very Muskyish outside, bummer is I was suppose to be on Mille Lacs, but thanks to the weather that didn't happen. Although one lakes rampage doesnt mean all lakes were on fire. Goofy Muskies, stupid fish.

Jon,

I truly believe that the same phenominon (excuse the spelling) exists with large northerns as well. I go up to a lake in NW Manitoba for a week of nothern fishing each year. And it just amazes me how over and over again you can fish for hours and hours without a big fish and then in a 45 - 60 minute period you will land 3 or more 40+ inchers. And then nothing but 30" fish again. It's maddening! confused.gif

This has happened often enough that I know that it is not just coincidence. And if you or I had the answer as to why it occurs we probably wouldn't be posting on this board. we'd be laughing all the way to the bank.

Anyway, here is a picture from my most recent trip a couple weeks ago.

PS Let us all know when you do figure it out. I will be the first in line to pay for it. grin.gif

Jon:

That was me that said muskie fishing is a pratice in frustration!!! grin.gifgrin.gif I still believe its true.

I spent the day on the lake with a good friend. I just got him hooked on Muskie fishing this summer...the kid has the sickness really bad. One of the best days I have ever had on the water....watching him catch his first good sized muskie...44 incher...and some good girth on her.

I, on the other hand, struck out!!!! mad.gifmad.gif I had tons of follows in about a 1 hour window and then...NOTHING!!!! Pratice in frustration for sure! mad.gifsmirk.gifgrin.gif

This is why, when people say musky fishing is like bowhunting, I always agree. It could be 8 hours of nothing followed by 5 minutes of mayhem from the tree or on the water. It's hard to keep your guard up after that long in the blind or on the boat!

Ahh, the challenge. grin.gif

A guy can always turn in the .308 for the .22 and hunt rabbits, or shelve the musky rod and opt for the ultralite for crappies, but heck, when life is so short, why go for minis when the maxis are out there?
