walleye_guy18
I asked this same question in the wiscosin forum but I guess it would apply to this forum as well, here is my post."I just got back out to school in Wisconsin(Eau Claire) and found out that the sturgeon fishing season has just opened. I don't plan on keeping one or anything, but it would still be cool to target them for the month or so that the season is open. I'm not really sure if there is a "go to" bait for sturgeon but if there is, what do you guys catch them on? Last spring I caught quite a few sturgeon while I was fishing for walleyes with fatheads but we never really caught any huge ones(our biggest was only 45in)Anyways, just curious to see what everyone is using for bait."Wallye guy
fiskyknut
We fish them on the Rainy river and crawlers work good, sometimes crayfish scent on the crawlers seems to do somthing. They eat minnows of all types too, on the right spots they bite about any typical bait minnow. Crawlers usually get bit the most up here I would say, not counting all the sturgeon the walleye guys catch! I'll be fishing them whoppers next weekend yeehaa! fiskyknut

matthothand
Ditto. Wad up a bunch of crawlers and sit back. I've caught a lot of sturgeon on minnows but the best luck I've had has been with crawlers. Good luck!

bobO
I saw a guy on the river ice fishing for sturgeon one day. he had a silver shad that he had caught earlier in the day and cut chunks off of that and put it on his hooks and let it sit on the bottom, he was dead sticking them and would just watch the rod tip ends for movement. he was caughting sturgeon like they were panfish (about one every 1/2 hour) he let me fight like a 15 lber. I have never had a fish fight like that before in my life. Not sure if all of what he was doing was legal or not but thats how it all went down.
