Fenwick Techna AV VS. G-Loomis VS. St. Croix

How would you rate the Fenwick Techna AV to the G-Loomis to the St.Croix muskie rods? Which is better and why? I just bought a Techna AV last year and hardly used it and was wondering about getting another rod. Any inputs?

I like all of them. The St. Croixs are a nice rod, light good action, for the most part they are sensitive to the point you can feel the smaller blades turning. I also like the style of grips or cork, they seem to fit my smaller hands better. The price range of the St. Croixs is nice also. What I don't like about the Croixs is they carry sound or seem noisy, like they amp up the line noise. I believe fish can feel or hear this grinding/howling. Loomis makes a good rod, strong with a wide selection of actions from jerkbaits to light bucktail, and the warranty program is solid.I have never had trouble with any of my Loomis rods but they seem to be much heavier and I personaly think the cork grips are to big, granted I have small hands but my hands get sore trying to hold onto the grips. Another thing about Loomis is that they have the actions very strict, they don't really have a good do all rod in my opinion. The bucktail rods are great for throwing bucktails, jerk bait rods do only jerkbaits well, cross applying rod usage does not work out as well as the St. Croixs.

If I had to chose one make of rod I would have to go with the Thorne Bros. custom builds. Yes you are going to pay more money but what a rod. The boys at Thorne listen to what you want in a rod and tweek one out that is perfect for your application, size, even the color and trim you like. I just started using Thorne rods this spring and love em. I just had them set up a 8'6" bucktail rod with long small diameter grips with snazzy gold trim to match my reel and a custom hook holder since I don't use snaps only split rings. Oh ya they pimped my ride cool.gif To really get the feel for a style or brand of rod find someone that is willing to let you scew around and make a few cast with the differant makes, that way you can get a feel for what fits you and what works best for your style of fishing.

I was thinking bout changing my Fenwick over to St. Croix's because all my other rods are St. Croix's..

I have a 6'6" MF Baitcaster, 6'6" MF spinning rod and a 6'0 LF action rod. I was thinking baby just got with a 7'0" HF action for my musky rod.

I have a Fenwick HMG bucktail rod and a Fenwick Techna AV crank/topwater rod both of which I dearly love. I don't know if you can get the HMG's anymore. Nothing wrong with these rods at all, and I also use Thorne Bro. customs for jerkbaits and a St. Croix Premier for utiltiy (bought the Techna instead of an Avid). All are great rods. In my opinion, however, you are better off spending the coin on the reels you use and upgrade there, as you will see and feel a bigger impact there, than in the difference among all these very good rods.
