GPS Help

Doop

Question

Hey guys,
I have my decision narrowed down to a Garmin GPS76s or a Lowrance IPro. Right now i'm leaning towards the Garmin. I don't like the fact that the Ipro isn't waterproof. The Navionics chip seems great but I'd rather have a waterproof unit. Does anyone else have any info?
Any help would be great!
Thanks!

Canuck,

Thanks for the report...do you use your unit for hunting? Right now i'm leaning toward the 76s but am wondering how that unit does in locating satelites in uneven territory? Like mountains, hills, whatever.

thanks for the help!!!

Doop, I have used both Gramin GPSMap 76 and Lowrance i-Finder units for hunting and fishing. Hunting included MN, Montana, and the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona. I was amazed at the detail of the Mapsource/Garmin software. Both units have been used on fly-in trips to Canada. The i-Finder has perhaps greater secondary and tertiary information and perhaps a brighter screen. As to some of the upcoming downloadable lake contour maps, the Lakemaster Promap Series (50+ high detailed lake contour maps plus 200 additional lakemaps) for Minnesota is now available in TWO formats for select Garmin GPS units ( including GPSMap 76S). The cd-rom format will allow the user to download the ProMap Series to only one unit. The pre-programmed card version will work in any Garmin unit that accepts cards. These are produced by Navionics for Lakemaster. At this time there is no Lakemaster ProMap Series available for Lowrance units. Perhaps a call or e-mail to Lowrance might give some timetable. Hope this helps. Doc Kehr

I mostly use mine for hunting but do use it for Salmon and Lake Trout. The real nice extra thing about this 76S for me was I was able to transfer all my points from the 38 to the 76 with no problem. I find the 76S picks up sat.. sooooooooo easy and quick it is amazing. One can be sitting at the kitchen table and still grab them. U have a big advantage on me as we can not get the topos for Canada no matter what unit I would buy but U can get topos for all of the USA. I have the map source and use it for driving in Canada and the US. I hear Garmin is coming up with even a better unit that will have something like 66 meg. It is supposed to be out this April.
