Northern Cardinals

They don't come much prettier than these winter mainstays. Post em' if you've got em'. I've only got this one. I don't have the right habitat to really keep them around all winter. I get them at my feeders, but the nearest evergreens are miles away.

Always wanted to draw cardinals in to the feeder, but always have lived too far north, and they are only occasional to rare visitors. But heck, we've got a lot of thick shrubbery in our new yard, with very old and extensive lilac hedges, elderberry and dogwood and juneberry all over, so why not this winter?

hey I live on Juneberry Court!! That must explain why in the winter time we have 10-14 of them in our bushes at one time. I've got some pictures (not the best) that I'll upload when I get home (tomorrow night).

I guess I see so many that I take them for granted. I'll trade a dozen Cardinals for 6 ROSE breasted Grosbeaks and 6 Indigo Buntings. Any takers?

Buzz,

I shot that with my D70 in January of this year, while out shooting ducks and geese. He flew right into a tree immediately to my left. I had the Sigma 170-500 zoom attached to the camera, and the camera attached to the tripod. He was in a position that I couldn't get to with the camera on the tripod, so I had to hit the quick clamp and grab the camera off the tripod. I shot this handheld at around 300mm, so if you factor in the digital magnification factor for the D70 (1.5x) it was shot at around 450mm. It is by far the best Cardinal shot I have. I wish the background wasn't so cluttered, but it is a nice habitat shot.
