The Ultimate Panfish League!!!

Matt Johnson

Recommended Posts

First event is in about 2 months...

Saturday, December 31 at Linwood Lake

There are still spots available for anyone interested.

Early ice on Linwood can provide some excellent panfish action for both crappies and bluegills. A lot of perch in the lake, but you'll have to pick through them to get any of real size. I've seen some monster sunfish come out of Linwood, and anyone who fishes that area knows there are a lot of crappies in the lake too.

Or else ask any questions you have right here.

Still time to register for the league. Just filled a few more spots this week. Must be the new addition of ice on a few of the lakes grin.gif ...

I'm looking at possibly extending the amount of teams per event because of the number of responses I've been getting, but we'll wait and see...

This is really shaping out to be an exciting league!

I'll be out there on Friday the 30th. Bob Horn from Illinois will be joining me for the day.

How's the bite out there? Anyone do any good? I would imagine you're catching crappies over the deeper holes. Anyone tie into the gills?

marked fish during the day over the deep holes. Nothing would bite and I tried everything. I was fishing in the middle of the day though. Ice is only 4-5" just right of the launch area. There is a creek that way. Otherwise 7-8" everywhere I went. Off to the tackle store with my christmas certificates in hand! Did see a 8lb northern pulled up and many 1 Lb ers.

Those are them tight-lipped crappies that will sit there all winter long. Best way I've caught them was on a Genz Bug with the smallest crappie minnow I could find hooked upside-down and through the tail rigged below an Ice Buster Bobber. Sometimes you just got sit and wait for one to rise and suck it in. Some of those marks you're picking up are larger fish too, but they are very, very negative. I've seen a few 12-14 inch white crappies come out of that hole, they are indeed mixed in with those little ones, however, there's a stack of those 7-9 inch black crappies on that spot too...

Interesting weather out there. At one point I couldn't see across the lake because of the snow. Didn't seem to hinder the fish activity though, they just kept on biting, but not much size to the pannies. A lot of fish out there, just need to sort through the little ones...

Ice conditions were pretty good, everything I punched through was about 7-8 inches or so. This snow sure makes for traveling on the ice on foot a little more difficult.

Forecast is calling for less wind and no snow tomorrow, highs in the low 30s, should be an excellent day on the ice...

See everyone in the morning!

Matt,

Thanks for putting on the UPL...me and Cyberfish were shocked that we won first shocked.giflaugh.gif. The bite defititely wasn't hot like it was monday when we pre-fished. Funny thing, when we went back out and fished, I pulled in a respectable, eatable-sized perch-probably 10" tongue.gif....not the pencils that were available at weigh-in!!! Anyway, you can bet we'll sign up for the Rush lake event in February.

Casey,

You and Mike are good sticks, its no surprise to me that the two of you took first place. Mike always seems to find the big panfish, its been like that as long as I've known him.

Brian and I couldn't buy a crappie over 9 inches, the big ones were avoiding us. The sunfish were all over and some alright size fish, but nothing like we landed on Friday. I think the biggest weighed in was probably only 8.5 inches. The weather system threw a little curveball at us and those fish took a hike.

I was going to head out there again this morning to see if a couple of those 13-inchers wanted to play, but I ended up having breakfast with my dad instead smile.gif

See you on Rush!

This upcoming Sunday is the next UPL event! We'll be out on Medicine Lake. Still some spots open if anyone is interested. A great panfish lake, with some great potential for both quality and quantity! Some decent perch in the lake too!

I'd rather fish with a partner, but both my son-in-laws are busy, so I was just checking to see if anyone else needed a partner.

The activities director has changed my mind for me though... I'm still trying to convince her, but I may be out of luck this w/e. mad.gif

The weigh-in will be out on the ice, someplace out from French Park. I'll announce where exactly it'll be at in the morning prior to the event. As of right now we're going to meet at French Park at 7:45am, and the start time is at 8am...

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
