St Croix rod action?

graybeard2

Question

Gonna stop at Cabela's tomorrow and pick out a St Croix rod. Always wanted to try one. I was thinking of getting a med-light 6 or 6 1/2 footer and using it for light lindy rigging and also some panfishing. Would this work or am I expecting too much from 1 rod?

I have a 6 1/2 light action Avid and its great for both. I would probably lean more towards a 7' for lindy rigging though. I also have a 7' Legend in a med/light and its great for rigging. I have a 8.5' Avid for really light rigging, like a split shot and hook trype stuff and love ot. Its a light action with a fast tip.

I guess if I were you I would look at a Avid in a 7' light or Med/Light both with a fast tip.

Another option is looking into a Midwest rod. You can get a custom rod for about what a Avid would cost. Really nice rod at that. www.midwestrodandreel.com

I have 2 7' med/lite st. croix's. One is a legend the other is a tournament series lindy rig rod. Both are great for jigging/rigging. I don't think I would ever choose either rod for panfish. Just not sensitive enough.

To stay in a certain budget I would choose a lower end St. Croix and get another Ultra lite for Panfish.

I use a 6.5' medium light St. Croix for jigging and really like it. I use a 7' medium (or medium heavy) St. Croix for rigging - the medium light is lighter than I like for rigging unless I'm going with really light weights. If you want just 1 rod a 6.5' would let you get by for rigging, but a 6' rod would be awfully short. Good luck.
