Are lighted sight pins legal?

Recommended Posts

I am pretty sure on this.. but lighted pins are not illegal. HOwever, they do make it so you would not be elligable for P&Y. The one thing you do have to remember is, there is a law on shooting/hunting times, and to stay within those times. But the use of lighted pins in those times I believe is legal.

I sure hope so at least.. I have a light on my sight as well.. In my opinon, making sure you make a quick clean kill is most important!

Hey guys.

My understanding is that they aren't illegal. The nice thing about a lighted sight is when your in the woods. Sometimes it can be 10 minutes past legal shooting hours but in the woods it's too dark to see yet. I'd hate for the big one to come walking by during legal shooting hours and not be able to see my pin!!

Not sure about the P&Y part of it!! Does anyone know for sure??

TT- If you read page 60 of the reg booklet. It doesnt say anything about lighted sight pins. I really do not think that there is a law aginst having lighted sights. I would think they wouldnt sell lighted sights in MN if it were against the law to use them.

I am faily sure(90%) that if you have a lighted sights are not permitted for Pope&Young...

The rule reads this... this is a quote from the Pope and Young page...

Quote:

# By the use of electronic devices for attracting, locating, or pursuing game or guiding the hunter to such game, or by the use of a bow or arrow to which any electronic device is attached.

I would consider a light on a sight an eletronic device attached to the bow.

I looked up in the North Dakota regs were I bow hunt and battery lighted or electronic lighted pins are not legal. Now when you use the common fiber optic pins that come on your sights, they are legal.I did not look up in the Mn. regs, but I do believe that they are not legal, only fiber optic.Iam going to check on this.

I agree with you Lee, because they use a battery, which as of last year anything that uses a battery is not legal to hunt with. Even red dot scopes are in the same catagory. It doesn't have to cast a light on the game, just the use of a battery makes these illegal. Gps's would also fall into the same class because they are considered electronic because of the use of a battery. You could get a ticket if you had a strict co. I'm not sure if this canged this year or not.

Battery and light is OK in MN to light up your pins. Not OK in ND. I use fiber optic and I have no problem seeing pins during legal shooting time even if cloudy. What if your battery goes dead. Then there's the P&Y issue. If I can't see the pin good enough I would be guessing on the size of the rack under me. Lots of differences in pins out there. You may need to expieriment to see which brand works best with your eyes. Godd luck.

Usually with good fiber optic pins you can see your target just fine during legal shooting hours. There have been times when a lighted pin would maybe gotten me another shot, but then legally it would have been past hours.I know that the big boys come out late, but usually I dont like shooting the last 10 minutes anyway as I like to be able to find first blood before dark, and if you shoot that very last minute you wont find that blood, and there is a good chace that you wont get a real good hit.No sense of wounding a trophy buck.Better off to find a real good spot that you can get a shot off b-4 that last minute.Respect for the animal is of great importance and also always keeps you in legal shooting hours.GOOD LUCK.
