Night Walleyes

The walleye bit was tough last night and I missed the best bite which seemed to be 5:30 - 7 p.m. but that's how it goes I bumped 2 and caught one keeper 17". Fished alot of places and snagged some huge shad 6 -7" long and I'm wondering if these eyes whack like 3 or 4 of these huge shad early and just lay rest on the bottom with full bellies. I'll try earlier tonight if I can but the renegade was the only plug I got hit's on (purple).

Wind was whipping pretty good out of the NW 15-20 mph with gusts and I managed 2 17" walleyes underneath the bridge on the barge canal on TS-09 Thunderstick black/silver. A couple more walleyes were landed by the guys to the left of me on jigs.

This was the only place I could fish and get a decent cast outbecause of the wind. Things slowed by 4:30 p.m.

Hard Fishing? "You bet"

Lot's of driving around the Lake? "You bet".

Worth it? "When it pays off, priceless".

Waded and worked all my places on the northeeast and southeast end of the lake this trip which went from about 6:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. without even a bump. Then went Northwest and fished off Godfrey and App's in Cleveland and still no fish. Not giving up at 11 p.m. I headed back down to southeast end of the lake where I started and within 5 minutes caught my 1st walleye a 22" on a Smithwick Rattlin Roque blue/chrome/orange belly, suspender. After about a 1/2 hour fishing I received a phone call from my buddy Rob and right after I hung up with Rob I caught a nice 19" eye on a TS 09 Storm Blue/Chrome Thunderstick and then the phone rang shortly after Rob and the next call was from my friend Frank who gave me a little tip for that area and on the very first cast, wham a nice 19". Thanks Frank! So by 11:56 p.m. I had my limit FINALLY. All around the lake it was very slow so you had to put in the work to get her done. Schneibles was dead again talked to a couple of guys that came in from wading there and they didn't have a bump in 2.5 hours. Saw my neighbor Mario behind the restaurant and nothing was going on with them guys. Only guy I saw with a fish was under the bridge east side he had a 17" also caught on a rogue when I just got out of the van, but that was it.

I joined Phishin Phil on the north run with Tommy when I fished Godfrey. I didn't get another strike after 12:00 a.m. but my adrenaline rush kept me going till till 1:20 a.m.. Got home about 2:20 a.m. this morning as I on the way home I had to take a few shot's under the bridge... Well I got fish to clean anyhow...

Wasn't planning on fishing last night but my Cleveland Browns made a mockery of themselves by halftime so I hit the road to Oneida and had a pretty good time on the east end. The bar was closed for business but the kitchen was open so to speak. I doubled up fairly quickly all fish were between 16" and 21". Slight chop when I arrived grew into 15 to 20 mph winds out of the west. All fish came

on a Smithwick Rattlin Roque Blue/Chrome w orange belly. Had the place all to myself until about 3 a.m. when a couple of guys showed up. It seems like more walleyes lately I have caught that have these Tumor like growths on them. There not all over the fish but some are just the head or behind the dorsal fin. 1 out of every 3 fish, more than in years past. I'll have to do some research on that and try to find out what those growths are.

Hi Tim! I went out from 6 to 9 PM. I get up at 5:20 AM so I couldn't go much later. I had two 'eyes, 22" and 23", and a 33" northern that inhalled a #14 Husky Jerk. She had all three trebles in the gills so I had to keep her. I thought I had a 30"+ walleye when I first saw it but it was fighting weird so I had a hunch that it was a pike.

I had ice on my tackle box when i left.

We have temps in the 30's and snow coming. Yuck!

Nice going Chuck! I also caught a northern pike like that at night near a lighted pier the water was so clear I actually saw him shoot out of the shadows and smash my super rogue. My buddy Bruce with me that night and helped me land her. All I wanted was my plug back. Man they can sure pull them big northerns. Good job on the eyes last night Bud. Got some filleting to do when I get out of work today.

At 7:30 p.m last night my wife had gotten back from her P.T.O. metting and later on I let the dog out to go to the bathroom at about 9:15 p.m. and there was an unseasonably warm wind blowing from the east and it just felt right so I said Rosa I just got a feeling the walleyes are going to be in a good mood tonight and she gave me the green light and so I headed to fish the North Shore because my buddy Phil said a good east win can turn things on at the north side of the lake so that's where I went and things didn't look good at spot #1 I fished for about an hour there and caught two nice eaters a 16 and a 17" on a 3" Challenger minnow black and chrome but I also lost a slob when I was trying to turn her I could see it was at least 7 or 8 pounds but the trebs didn't hold and she got off so after cussing myself out I decided to leave so I ventured to spot #2 and in an hour and a half I picked up 4 fish, nothing large all between 16" and 17" eyes, excellent eaters. So hear it is about 12:30 a.m. and I said well let me just check a spot I like to fish with CNY Frank and the boys before I go home completely satisfied that I doubled and finished reasonably early. Well the kitchen was empty but the pantry was full to the right I mean chock full to the right so to speak... I started out with my Smithwick Rattlin Rouge and after 20 min. I got just one bump so I switched up plugs and through right a couple of casts with my Storm TS 09 Thunderstick blue/chrome fully intending to call at night after a few casts. Adn what happens!!! Complete Chaos! On the first cast wham a nice 17", second cast wham a nice 19", third cast a lovely 18" well this theme continued for 9 straight casts with the largest fish about 20". To make a long story short I caught a total of 37 walleyes last night and would have stayed longer if I had a buddy with me but I just couldn't stop it was the night I had been longing for and what I had been waiting for all fall kind of like when Rob, Greg and his son Mike and I caught 50 a piece a couple years back. As the fish kept coming the more activity I saw where I was casting, the slashing and crashing of bait could be heard from a great distance they were all over and top each other as a I landed two fish broad side. What a night it just would have been better if I could have shared it with a buddy. Don't know how many doubles we would of have had but it was unreal. One guy with a truck pulled down in the parking area and turned around and left around 3 a.m. He shouldn't have left I would have put him right on em...

Phil and I had a blast off the bar last night. When we got there at 10 p.m. Chin Chong had 3 eyes in a Walmart bag that looked like they were frozen solid. He said he caught them early and that he had been there since 4:30 p.m. and in 5 1/2 hours 3 keepers, I looked over at Phil as we walked down to the point and said, "If he only had three he didn't know what he was doing. They should be all over the place". The lake was pretty much dead calm out there with just a hint of guide tips freezing but not bad at all. Well Phil makes his first cast and slam a nice walleye and on my second cast my first eye. Anyhow the saga continued and even old North Shore got into the action as well. P.S. Greg hope you did well on the deer this a.m.

Anyhow by about 2:30 a.m. and somewhere around 35 eyes caught by myself and 28 caught by Phil largest being a beautiful 24" walleye I released I decided to call it quits. It was a sad way to end but a slammer eye hit close to shore and bolted off with the only blue/chrome, orange belly Rattlin Roque I had and that was how my night ended. Not to many guys out really only saw a total of 3 guys off Shneibles and the bridge was in and out... Got some filleting to do here and fish fry at Greg's tonight.

Greg's party at the house went very well. I cooked up about 11 pounds of walleye, perch and crappie fillets enjoyed Cushman's pit steaks and Michaels goose breast wrapped in bacon and green pepper was good as well. The sausage spread on rye ordourves were outstanding. Any how about 9 p.m. Tyler and I went down to the bar and Phishin Phil arrived there at 9:30. The fish weren't suicidal like the last couple of nights but Tyler did well he caught his limit by 10:30 p.m.. He caught a nice 18" a 17" and a 16.5". Fish were not thick by any stretch, very spotty you had to work hard. Got some nice pictures of Phil and Tyler with there fish. Tyler caught all his fish on a Challenger minnow black/silver prism. Nice work T!

The walleye fishing has been slowing down a hair on the old reliable spots. New spots have to be located and the closer you are to current the more successful you are as of late. So if you go to the east end of Oneida Lake check out the creeks and barge canal areas that come in and even feeder creeks up into main river flows. Walleyes will stage around any cover or deep depressions associated around intersections or behind blowndown trees adjacent to feeders. Current change of direction areas are hot spots right now as the shad have all but died off but the buckeyes are extremely thick in these creek areas. Good luck!

Tyler and I fished after work trying to get to the walleyes early while it wasn't that cold....Oh well, needless to say we fished from about 3:45 p.m. to 6: 15 p.m. with out a bump. One of the slip mouths I fished had skim ice and it was starting to reach out on to the lake. It was miserable cold on the finger tips so Tyler and I stopped for coffee and hot chocolate and headed home. At 7:45 I get a call from Franky Fish and he got his limit. He had to work for them and it was no picnic but he's been on a roll the last two trips, way to go Frank! I guess the guys around him didn't fair very well.
