Would I rather be lucky than good?

Yesterday was a great day to take out Maureen. She likes warm weather fishing and yesterday was about 92. She could wear her favorite fishing clothes, a bikini. It's the first year she has been fishing in years and I'm trying to teach basic technique and fishing skills. Yesterday we are targeting smallmouth bass in the St. Louis River. Pitching a jig and minnow against shady banks is having surprising success and I can hardly get a line in myself because I'm baiting hooks and landing Maureen's fish. I'm just about to finally throw a line in after landing 4 of her fish when Maureen over casts and leaves her jig well wrapped around an alder branch, only the tail of the minnow touching the water. She gives me a dumb helpless look, and I ask "how are you going to get out of that now?" No sooner do the words come out of my mouth than a northern erupts out of nowhere, hammers the jig, strips the leaves off the branch, and perfectly clears the line from the bush. "That's how I'm going to get out of there, smart-#@&!" comes her perky reply.

Well, sometimes, maybe it is better to be lucky than good.

give her a pat on the back for me!.. ata girl!

Reminds me of a bass tournament I fished quite a few years ago on Tonka.. I was skipping crankbaits under docks. Well, one cast did not go so well. I ended up wrapping the line around a rope tied to a boat and the lure hung about a foot above the water. As I was easing the boat nearer the dock to un tie the line a 2 lb bass jumped up and stuck itself on the lure...

Sounds like a great outing. Congrats to her from me as well.

Funny thing is I get my fair share of treebass, but my ending usually involves some bad words, cutting the line and breaking branches.

Again congrats on the fun outing

I assumed that you all managed to land the northern? What line did you use? I am quite surprised that the line did not break.

Anyway..very good story. Thanks. It gave me a good grin for the day.

Indeed we did land the northern. Not a big fish, maybe 18 or 20". The line was 2#-10# Power Pro, with a 15# Flourocarbon leader. The northern was lip hooked.

Glad you fellas got a chuckle out of this, I've gotten good mileage out of it at work.
