dawg, You have 4 threads going on this same subject. Please in the future use the same thread you have going. Reason 1. its easier to help you when we have all the info in one place. Reason 2. Even though some of the thoughts may be on the wrong track, this helps in the process of elimination, plus we can all learn from your experience. So instead of starting a new thread stating you found the problem post that in the original thread and for heavens sake state what you've found! I'm guessing pinion gear or roller bearing?

Before you start disassembly of the prop shaft and carrier bearing housing you should have a manual because there are some steps you need to do before the disassembly. Checking the reverse gear backlash is one of them and the manual with have the tollorances for that. You'll need a cover nut tool and should be able to buy one at any Merc dealer, good chance you'll have to order it or who knows they may rent you theirs. For this project you might save time, money and heart ache if you have a shop do the repair.
