Snaps swivels for trolling ?

18 inch Crappie

Question

I have been using snap swivels on my rod with 8lb fireline so I can switch from a lindy set up to a crank with ease. What do you use and what is the best way? Is it best to tie right to the line or a set up like I am using now? I was at Gander buying new swivels and talking to the guy there, he said not to use them with Rapalas. Thanks for any info on this.

I just use snaps for attaching crank baits,no swivel. It's probably best to tie them on directly however with fireline tying a palomar around all those trebbles can get a little annoying.

I dont use a swivel to directly tie to my cranks as I opt for a cross lock snap instead. The swivel immediate to the cranks seems to make a crank not run as true. But just using a snap, I am able to keep a crank running good.

I dont know how good this would work for switching back and forth from cranks to lindy rigs though. I think there would be too much line twist with out some type of swivel in the mix.

If you use some kind of snap with out a swivel you should be fine for cranks. Thats all I use since its to hard to tie a Palomar knot correctly.

As for switching back and fourth, You could clip on a swivel at the end of your snells or clip another snap/swivel onto the snap thats on your line. It gets to be a bit of metal on there but thats about all you can do with out re-tying.
