waterlogged flotation

76k20

Question

anyone ever experience this. If I can dry it out I assume it will soak up water again. what is a reasonable price for repairs of this nature. If I were to do it myself I would probably use the blue sheets of closed cell foam rather than the closed cell expansion foam. When I cut some out to repair a cracked livewell fiting it was saturated. also to remove the main floor in the boat I would have to drill rivets through the side of the boat for the livewell, steering console, rodlocker, and rear platform that all sit on top of the base floor.

Wet flotation won't hurt a thing. By definition, closed cell foam is just that....."closed cell".

If you have wood stringers, or other material in the foam that may be subject to damage, then you may have a problem. But the foam itself will still function as flotation even if wet.

Keep you boat tilted to the rear at the maximum angle possible when not connected to your truck. Keep the plug out so that you can continue to drain from the boat. It may take a while, but it should dry out.

The two biggest problems with wet foam are the added weight and like wastewaterguru said, the collateral damage to your stringers, floor, etc. We get alot of these jobs in the shop, and it's very repairable, but it's something that should probably be addressed. Drying or replacing foam is alot easier than replacing the stringers and floor, which is usually what we end up doing to most of the boats that come in our shop because they weren't dealt with soon enough.
