FishingwithJake
Hi everyone! My girlfriend and I are planning a camping trip to Jay Cooke the first weekend in August. We've heard its a beautiful park. This will be our first time so if there is anyone out there who has been to Jay Cooke, any suggestions on campsites would be appreciated. We plan on staying in a tent and would like an electric site. Also, is there a place to fish? Thank you for any of your responses.
cyberamish
I've stayed out there a number of times in the past, it is a great facility!! As far as what campsites I couldn't tell ya, we always stayed along the interior roads near the showers/restrooms. Definately clean up after yourselves especially before turning in at night.... it is raccoon and black bear heaven around there. Fishingwise there are some decent lakes near there that hold pike, bass, and some 'eyes. Chub Lake is about 5 - 10 miles from there and has a nice beach area and decent access. Lot's of medium to small bass and pike. You also have the St. Louis farther downstream from the park. Walleyes may not be around at that time but smallmouths, pike, muskie, and some cats will be. post a question in the Duluth/BWCA forum regarding the river that time of year. Good luck! bbock
I haven't ever camped there, living in Duluth, but I do want to say that you can't fish in Chub lake any more. There was just a big fish kill for some reason and the lake is closed.I guess one can still fish in the Thomson reservoir, which is just north of the park. I don't know how the fishing is IN the park though, I hike & ski there all the time and never fish. Asking in the Duluth forum will probably net you some answers. That said, it's a beatiful park, and I hope you enjoy your trip.
