jasonk
We are heading up this weekend and I am just wondering how everyone has been doing. I am not looking for specific spots of course. Are the walleyes on the reefs? Down deep? Bait preference? etc. I will post next week and let you know how we do. Thanks in advance for any info. marknamy
Sounds like the eyes are moving to the reefs. Have heard a couple of reports of fish being caught on points and reefs, 15-20 fow, in transition areas. The bite is still on minnows, but I would deffinitely have some leeches and crawlers along just in case.
leechlake
I've been up twice now, the last time we came hom on June 7th and the fish were in 15-20' we were fishing sand and rocks though. 9 guys, 3 days caught over 450 eyes, one day we couldn't catch them under 18 hardly and the other two days we caught many 13-15" and had to work through those to get 20" plus fish. Fun as always. We almost always pull spinners and bottom bouncers with minnows. Just to be clear we only kept our limit, didn't keep 450 fish! Wild Thing
What's the CURRENT UPDATE on these Morson fish? Are they on the reefs yet? One week up there can be a huge change, they can totally move to new pattern. Let's hear it, folks! And leechlake, do you really use minnows all summer? We've always gone to crawlers by now -- a fraction of the cost and better fishing, we've found. Don't use many minnows past June 15... see you up there Thursday, folks! eskay
Just got back late Sunday from morson. Walleyes were scattered everywhere from 2' to 25'. Couldn't really pattern them. caught most on anything chartreuse color. Shad Raps, jointed rapala, Husky Jerks, etc. The artificals seemed to work better than live bait, and we tried minnows, crawlers and leeches. Caught 22" &24" trolling in 15-18' with chartreuse Shad Rap. Hot and flat on Friday, when we fished for smaller fish. Quite a few slot northerns, too, including one at 38 1/2" Sat & Sun was muskie fishing. Two in my boat, 11 follows, 5 hits, two fish in the boat-36 1/2" & 37 1/2" on smaller black bucktails w/ bright colored colorado blades, had a BIG fish roll on the bait at boatside, miss and swatted the end of my pole with her tail!! Had to sit down after that one....Other boat 2 fish both caught on Topraider 34 1/2" and 42 1/2". Windy and picked up more wind on Sunday.Hope this helps. Just not much pattern on the 'eyes. leechlake
We used crawlers and minnows opening weekend but I think they are a hassle so I prefer minnows. During July we use leeches also along with Minnows. I've been going up to Morson for 15 years and have never done poorly and I can do poorly in Minnesota a lot. Some times we make a rule to not fish a spot we've ever fished and we nearly always catch fish on random islands, it's a fun thing to do.
dnoz
I am heading up to Morson this weekend also. Mainly have fished Walleyes but I am going to try Muskie fishing this year. Any tips on areas to target Muskies would be great.
Wild Thing
eskay, thanks for the report. sounds like they are in transition. I wonder if they ever hit the sand for shiners this year? Last year seemed they just moved right to the reefs. I'll be up there a lot over the next five weeks so we should be able to get a pattern going. It's just easier to find and fish them when they hit the reefs. two weeks ago we had our best louck in the rubble off the points near sand.... lots of nice fish... see you on the water! P.S. Did you notice any flooded docks? We're swetting our boathouse. It's got to be close to the top of the dock according to the LOW control baord reports. This makes three of the past four years with water levels in the top 5 percentile, near records. Very odd...
eskay
Wild Thing,We tried the sand, but nothing going. I forgot to mention that there are fish in the reefs and bars, just not in any concentration. All over as far as depths. The muskies we found were in areas where submergent vegetation met emergent vegetation on windswept areas.Didn't see any sign of flooded docks. In fact, our 50'+ dock is finally usable again after being dry due to low water for over a year. Nice to step out of the boat onto the dock without using a ladder.Good luck, I'm probably not going to get up until the end of July.

Wild Thing
Nice fish, too much water! Just got back from six days on Lac du Bois. The walleyes are on the reefs, but not really ON the reefs. Got some nice fish, including a 28.5 incher that went just over 8 pounds, couple of 25's and several above 18. But we also found fish near shoreline stuff where they were in May, so go figure. Water temp at 69 degrees with tons of wind and rain, very odd weather. Crawlers outperformed minnows so I think they've made that transition already. The lake is still rising -- up 24 inches since early May!!! -- and is in the top 92 percentile. That means the water is this high on this day only 8 years out of 100, so not very often. Many docks in the Morson area are under water as people try feverishly to put barrels on top to keep them in place. The forecast is slightly better -- up only 2 more inches -- if rain stops. If it goes up six inches more, my boathouse docks go under. Yikes. That's only happened once before -- after the '02 flood that nailed Rosseau. Be careful! Many rocks that usually are exposed now are under water!! Those wonderful sand beaches for shore lunch have shrunk considerably. Mosquitos are awful after sunset and when wind goes down. Nine days at home then back up for nine. Can't wait. Keep those reports coming!

jasonk
Well, fishing was ok. We had to work pretty hard to put some in the boat. We were told to fish the reefs, so we did. Top, sides, bottom - not much happening. After I quit being stubborn we tried points and did much better. Crawlers on bouncers in 20'+. We had a couple nice fish fries and a good time was had by all. Wild Thing
Hey, Morson folks, how about an update!? I see they had some bad storms on Sunday up there and that the water is still rising. How about the walleyes? I'm heading up Friday for nine glorious days on Lac du Bois!!!'
