Smallies attacking Walleyes?

This weekend I was fishing in a Lake that has an over abundance of smallies. Every one we caught this weekend went between 3-5lbs. Nice fish but way to many. caught about 30 in 2 days all that size.

We were fishing for walleyes and when we would hook into a walleye we would see that the smallies would attack the walleye while we were realling them in. Why do they do that? Is it because they are really territorial or what? Just wondering, I have never seen that before.

Maybe they thought the walleye was dead the way they roll over and don't put up a fight. Or maybe they were trying to get the walleye to put up a fight, just for your amusement tongue.gif.

Ive seen this before when fishing smallmouth. They follow the hooked fish trying to steal the food (your bait) from it. Ive heard reports of people catching two smallies on one lure because of this aggression. Some times when fishing smallmouth if one person hooks a fish if another person drops a tube bait around the boat you will get a double.

Way to go outdoor guy...you let the secret out. As I was reading the posts I was really hoping that you wouldn't say the name of the lake.

All you bass guys, you are all catch and release guys...if you seriously go, have fun. There are a lot of smallies in the 3-4 pound range. 5 pounders....they're in there but sometimes you really have to work for them.

Also if you catch any walleyes as a bonus...keep them all! We don't want them to take over our precious smallie lake. LOL...Just kidding! wink.gif

They know that they are there now, but can they catch that many. There was one spot that we caught 80% of them and the rest where scattered out through other spots. Also the spot where we caught most of them, there where other people there not catching to many of them and where watching us, real them in left and right. Maybe it was because we wanted walleyes and the smallies decided to bite our lures. They are a blast to catch but when you don't want to catch them they bgin to become a nusense. Reason i say nusense is because we were in the walleye tourny. Good Luck to you guys that go out there and try.

The one thing Green has going for it is its huge size. The fish can be on one key spot one day then on a completely different spot the next. There is so much structure in that lake that it is just crazy. Lots of fish, but also lots of places the fish can be!

Yea, I've heard a lot of the locals there hate those smallies? Are you guys crazy? As stated before, smallies will do this to each other as well, just trying to get the food. A common tactic on smallies is to have your buddy drop a line down as your reeling in your smallie to catch another.

A lot of the locals believe that Green is a "walleye lake". Years back they changed the regs on smallies so that all fish bigger than 14" must be released. Since then the smallies have become huge and numerous. They have pushed the walleyes off of their traditional spots and have made them harder to find. This equals angry walleye guys. They put full blame on the smallies and the regs.

Personally I love it. There isn't too many other places in the state that you can go out smallmouth fishing and average 3-4 pound fish.

Well said leech! I find it kind of funny that the locals put all the blame on the DNR and the smallie regs. Time to start fishing the walleyes differently if it was me. Smallies have been increasing their range throughout the country the last ten years or so. Just look at the great lakes fisheries as an example. Mille Lacs is another. I'm sure the protective regs have helped, but I gotta believe the smallies would be more abundant today versus ten years ago with or without the regs. I think it has something to do with our climate shifting to shorter winters. Anyway, I think we have plenty of walleye lakes in MN. Can't us bass guys have a few too?

I have to agree with Superduty. How many walleye lakes would we have if the DNR didn't stock them? I don't know if Green Lake is a natural walleye lake or a stocked lake, but if the smallies are thriving in the lake then leave them be. There are plenty of other lakes with walleyes in them (only because the DNR stocks them).
