83 90hp evinrude

Question

Found a '90 smokercraft fazer 171 with a '83 90 horse evin. on the back. I am not that familiar with the early 80's evinrude, are they/were they good motors or just a hassel. The place I found it at wants 4300 for it, of course the tires on the trailer are seriously bad, but it does have a less than 5 year old trolling motor and a 2 year old depth finder and a flasher on the motor.

I want to know if this era of motors were worth their salt or not......

Thanks

Well if the compression numbers are good it's a great motor.

You will want to have those numbers checked by a another dealer if possible.

I would start at $3200 and go no more then $3500 if everything checks out.

I just sold my boat that I owned for 10 years with a '83 90hp Evinrude. Great motor is all I can say. Do all the regular annual maintenance and it will run forever. To me it sounds like the price is a bit high though.

These V4s were great motors. I believe price is high, but it depends on conditions of boat, motor and trailer.

If tires are shot, that's a sign something else is wrong, have compression checked, and lower unit pressure tested. At that price it should be seller duty.
