Thanks for all the excellent sugestions. I am not as enthused anymore for a 44 mag. I especially like the idea of customizing her 270.(I never thought of that either)

I shoot a 742 carbine in 308 (only 18" barrel), If I could find a gunsmith to shorten her stock a bit and take some off the 22" barrel, that might be the way to go, maybe pretty reasonable too. I'll check into it, thanks.

the remington model 7, in either 7mm-08 or the 243 are great rounds. some say the 243 is to fast at short ranges, and I disagree I took nice doe last year with a 243 100 grain at about 30 yards. she dropped in her tracks.
