Too Early for Evening Top Water Action??

Down to Earth

Recommended Posts

We are camping this weekend on Clear Lake near Waseca, MN which I've heard is a decent bass fishery. I'm pretty inexperienced in targetting bass, but have a few things in the arsenal for them. Will this weekend be too early to be throwing things like a spook or jitterbugs? Thanks.

Heck no! If the bass are active and in shallow water they'll often blow up on a top water, especially in a calm bay. Opening weekend we have a lot of luck in the shallow bays that are warmer with spinnerbaits, topwaters and shallow crankbaits. That's where I'd start first. If the weather turns colder they might be a little deeper and less aggressive. As for me, I'm hoping for some nice weather for a change! Good luck!

Ive found out last year that its never too early to throw a topwater bait. I only thought they were for mornings and evenings, but Ive caught some really big bass on 85 degree days at 3 in the afternoon. Ive caught smallies on 50 degree days also. I think if theyre there, they will hit. Just have confidence in the spook!

Any time is a good time for topwater!! just remember when the water is cool to go slow... The old way of tossing a lure to a likely spot and waiting for the rings from the splash down to get 10-12' away before you give it a little twitch then wait for those rings to get 8-10' away before you twitch again. If nothing happens then work it back to the boat and pick your next fishy spot. Take care and make good casts to good spots and take your time. I taught my own kids and their friends how to fish top water by taking a ball of yarn and playing with the cat. A lot of times that bass or Northern is just watching the lure just like a cat does untill they just have to go for it. I have gotten Bass using topwater lures this way from opening till late September and up here in northern MN that is some cool water... ( note no kitty's were harmed in the teaching of this fine art of fishing ) Go slow and sharpen your hooks. Cast to a spot and don't watch your partners lure.. grin.gif
