Back from Cheq Bay

Recommended Posts

First off, I must say that I've been spoiled by this water. Years ago, if I went out and caught a dozen smallies, 16 - 19 1/2", I'ld have flipped out. Outstanding day! Now I'm spoiled.

Two of us caught a couple dozen fish in 2 days, 16 - 19 1/2". Not bad by Bay standards, but not outstanding. We did spend some time exploring, thinking they may be out deeper, but ended up finding them in the usual spots. Best, was off Oak Point. Also caught some in the deeper cuts of Sand Cut. We spent 95% of our time Oak Point & Sand Cut. Only an hour Mon. eve in Kakagon Slough.

We only used hard jerkbaits, except about an hour using a spinnerbait -- one bump. Husky Jerk in baby bass and suspending Rogue in some kind of tan/brown perch pattern were best. That brown perch pattern had a heck of a run Tues. till my buddy lost it on a fish. You ever seen a grown man cry? Clown Husky worked good too, till a pike cut me off. Caught 2 other pike, one , a real thick fish. Tried X-Rap in a couple colors -- nothing, but sure looks good.

Water temps varied from 48-56 depending on where you were and time of day. Clouds seemed to help the bite it seemed.

Finished up on the Bay around 2 on Tues., then went to Star lake by Drummond for some LM action. Got some decent fish (16-17") and some action, but it doesn't compare to those bronze ball-busters on the Bay. Looking forward to the next trip (in a month hopefully).

Nice report Rascal, sounds like you had some fun... On Monday, I was over in the Kakagon area, but dont think I seen you guys. Pete Mania and I were throwing for some pike but couldnt find any up shallow. We figured they were out a little deeper, but thought to get back out and troll up some more trout/salmon.

I'll be out there tomorrow with Yooperhawg and his buddy, gonna go try to get them on some bass first then try our hands at some 'eyes. I have heard there is a good number of fish in the area from Oak Point over towards the mainland. We will see where we can hopefully get away from a few people.

Is that Pete Mania as in Muskie man Pete Mania? if so you are a lucky guy to share a boat with that fisherman. It's to bad that you can't fish the oar dock any more in Ashland i had some awsome days out there at the very end, for Coho, Splake and walleye always right around now when the bay cleared up Saw some awsome small mouth huvering around the end of the dock to they looked like small grouper but would never bite I'll be up on the bay 1st week of june. Thanks for the reports

Yeah, Pete "musky" Mania.. He's an all around good guy and a great stick on the water. And nah, we didnt do any filming, just got out on the water to catch him some trout to eat. Where we dinked around a bit trying to find a big pike or two.

Made it out smallie fishing for a bit yesterday, see my report in the other post.

Jim,

Sorry I missed you. I'll second Blackjack. Pete's a guy I respect and admire. Being a newbie muskyhunter, I've learned alot from reading and watching his stuff. Would've been nice to say hi and thanks.

If I could figure out how to posts pics, I'ld throw out a couple from the trip. Not too good with this computer thing.

If I head up again this year, I'll let you know.
