my outboard motor is lagging

ethan

Question

My outboard motor is not working out as it should. Water wasn't coming out from the pee hole, so we took it out to the this one guy to fix. He put in a new impeller and now water comes out. But the motor is really lagging. I can't put it in full throttle, and if I do, the motor will sound really loud but the propeller isn't spinning. Does anyone know what the problem is? Is it because the guy who installed it did something wrong? Thanks.

I put up a post but it didnt go through??? Well anyway, S.T. all you guys have helped me out so much!! I'm not pulling any legs here! I just cant seem to solve this problem. I guess it's because I'm very new to all this. This is my very first motor. Ok lets start all over here. This is a 18hp evinrude the year is in between 1960-1970. The 18hp motor is not going fast like it's suppose to, so I put in new spark plugs. A few days later I took it back out to see if that was the problem. Well didn't even get to test it out because there was no water coming out form the pee hole. I then took it back to the guy I bought from and had him replace the impeller. He called me to pick it up. I got there and he told me that he replaced something in the gear, that was fine with me. So I took it back out to see how it would do this time. Well thats when the propeller problem came. It was always spinning just seemed like it wouldn't spin at full throttle. I got some advice from all you guys so I checked out the propeller to see if I can see what you guys are talking about. I took a look at it but could see that there was anything wrong with it, so I opened the gears up and took a look at it to see if there was some that didnt look normal in there. Well I could tell, so I put everything back together. The next day I took it out to see if anything has changed. NOPE! the propeller still acting funny at full throttle, but I notice that the impeller is acting up again now! (Contact US Regarding This Word)!!! Water would shoot out and every other 5 seconds air with some smoke would shoot out,but this was only at lower throttle though. At higher throttle the impeller seems to be doing great. Well S.T. this is the whole thing. I'm not pulling your leg here at all! I know that the motor is good it's just that the lower unit is acting up. To me it doesnt seem to be a big problem, it's just that I dont know anything about outboard motor's. Thanks for all of your help.

send me an email.. I can come take a look at it.

[email protected]

leave me a phone number and I will call you. It should not take long to figure out your problem, and probably a solution.. Its raining outside right now so my outdoor chores are getting delayed, I cant use power tools in the rain.. I could look at it immediately.. not worried about money.

ethan I know your not pulling our leg, its getting frustrating not being able to see your rig. Did you drop the lower drive?

Theres a water tube that has to match up into the water pump. At that point theres a rubber seal the water tube slides into. If that water tube didn't go in right and pinched or rolled over that seal it'll not get water like it should.

Back to the cavatation plate is it level with the bottom of the boat. I'm not talking about the prop now I'm talking the horizontal fin above the prop, is it level with the bottom of the boat?

hey fisher dave, sorry for the delay. I havent had time to check my email and get into here for a few days now. However, my brother took it back to the guy who we bought the motor from and is still taking a look at the motor. I hope he can find out the problem. If not I'll give you guys a up date later. Thanks.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
