high temp alarm in Yamaha V-Max

The last 2 times I have used my 150 V-Max the alarm has screamed when idling out from landing. Its spitting water and the oil is full. I immediately shut the engine off and when I restart it does the same. If I wait 15 minutes and start it up, nothing ever happens and it runs great. I ran it 20 miles yesterday at high speeds without a problem -- after the initial screaming. Is this a faulty sensor or is another problem developing? Anybody ideas?

My Yamaha has done this a time or two also, sometimes if you don't get the oil lid screwed on tight. May have a bubble in the oil line. Check for a kink in the oil feed line as well. I'm guessing that's where the problem is.

I know this may sound a little simple, but the alarm system on the V-Max engines are also tied into the kill switch system. I have seen in the past where simply pulling the kill switch tether and then re-installing it will stop the alarms. Apparently sometimes the switch contacts will stick and cause the alarm to go off. I can't stress enough however, that if the problem persists, SEE A DEALER!

Ive checked the oil lines and the cap tightness and found no problem. I will try the kill switch method next. Your right, I dont want to destroy this motor and will be very careful. Thxs for the help so far. Gary

we went through the same situation last fall with our 30hp yamaha. (runs fine, runs good at speed, pees, but when at idel for a period of time the temp sensor comes on) We replaced the impellor which had 1 of the 3 or 4 "flippers" broken off. It still looked like it peed just fine keep in mind. After we replaced that impellor, no more problems at idel. I would try that first and then look to the other suggestions.

Yep.. I'd agree with Gus... if you're sure it's the high temp alarm you're not getting enough cooling water through the block at low speeds (and low impeller speeds), but at high speed you're getting enough.

Again, if you're sure it's the high temp warning I'd replace the impeller ASAP...
