Camper trailer brake question

I am need some advice on camper trailer brakes. I just recently bought a 29' camper trailer. The camper has the seven prong attachment. When I purchased my truck it already had the electronic brake controller installed. The attachment on the truck is just the standard flat 4 prong connector. I have a couple of questions.

1. I am looking at purchasing the converter from Northern tool that converts the 4 flat plug to the seven prong plug. Will that power the brakes on the camper as well or do I need to rewire my truck to the seven prong?

2. How can I tell if the electronic brake controller is working correctly. Anytime I apply the brakes on my truck a red light comes on so I am assuming the device works.

Any advice you can provide to this situation will be extremely helpful.

By 4 wire plug, do you mean one white, green, yellow and brown wire, or do you have another colored wire as well (I'm having a heck of a time remembering what color that last one is).

If it's only the brown, green, yellow and white then no, there are no provisions for electric brakes and you will need to re-wire. Kind of odd though that the controller is installed, but not the correct plug.

If it's the other one with the additional wire I believe that's only used to overide the surge brakes when backing the boat.. but I'm not 100% sure on that one though...

DNOZ, I believe you will want to get your vehicle rewired w/ the 7 plug. I am going to bet that your trailer is equipped w/ a refridgerator?.. I am not positive about this but, you probably do not have a seperate 12 v source coming from the battery for this. I know mine was wired this way to first run the tail lights and the fridge. It is probably possible to convert from 4 to 7 but would make me feel uncertain.

A 4 prong plug only has left and right turn signals, lights and brake, 5 prong adds backuplights or brake release for trailers with surge brakes, and seven prong is need for the electric brake controller

Correct, A 4 pronge has the white/negitive. Brown, yellow and yellow/brown wires. Your not setup for electric brakes.

You need to get a controller for electric brakes on your truck and then wire it.
