Cooter
Am considering replacing the treble hooks on a couple Husky Jerks with single hooks for fishing the weeds. Not sure which way the hook point should face - forwards or towards the tail - or alternate on the three hook hangers. Rear facing should be more weedless but not sure about hooking up. Which is the correct method?
guideman
Hey Cooter, Instead of single hooks, just try cutting the one hook that faces the front on each trebble. You'll have less chance of effecting the baits action if you just cut that one small piece of hook. It works great on topwater baits as well, they'll come through almost anything with the hook points facing up. SteveWilson
You could replace with singles, doubles, or treble hooks with weed guards on them. I bought a bunch of double hooks (like a treble missing a leg) that I use to replace trebles on spoons - works great in the weeds.
Long Gray Line
Try taking a jointed Rapala and remove the back half leaving the ring for the joint intact on the front. Add a split ring to the front half and then a thin wire worm hook, pointed up, attached to the split ring. You'll need to find a worm hook with the eye oriented the right way or add a second split ring to get the hook pointed up. Take a look at the jointed Rapala, you'll see what I mean. Take off the front treble hook and split ring. Add a plastic grub, tube or small worm to the worm hook and you have a virtually weedless stick bait you can throw into alot of the thickest stuff. If you really need weedless, file down the lip some. Should I patent this thingamajob or am I too late?
Bushwacker
Long Gray Line That is one heck of an idea. I will definitely be trying it out.
caster
Long Gray, I saw this published in a book called "Fishing tips & tricks". I made one too and cannot wait to try it out. I was messing around with it in my pond and it looks like it is going to work great. I really like the swimming action.
Cooter
Ace - Good idea but one hook on each treble doesn't necessarily face forward, or at least not straight forward. Does this matter or just call it close enough?
