It would be uncommon to find any in MN right now. Harvest occurs south to north and it just takes time. Keep an eye on the lilacs in the area. When they bloom the gray morels will be out. These are small shrooms. Mid-May is prime time for 45N latitude. "look up not down"

I was just south of Leech lake last weekend on a 70 degree weekend and it is just too soon. I need to see blooming flowers and the woods greening up and it just aint happening. Going up this weekend and try my "spots" but I think it still needs another week. Crappies and perch weren't in the my spots either, but the bass were shallow.

i will keep posting. keep her going fellas.

Southwest and western Iowa are getting yellows 1" to 3.5" tall. Kansas City, Mo. is hot right now. Still not much happening this far north. These temps will slow it down some also. 60-70 degree nights are what we need. Look up!

Alright. The wait must be getting close to being over. I have blossoms on my lilac at home but not quite ready to open. I also live on top of the 45th parallel. Just one block from my house. When can they be coming? Spring is a full two weeks early in the orchard.

Never thought the thread would get so much attention but glad to learn more and get the fever going. I bet it will be a choice on the "opener"... Walleye or mushrooms. Maybe choose a good spot for both and make a full day of it!

We will have to get one of the admin to set up a countdown for opener for morels. ha. I scouted a few areas out the other day when i was fishing on the river. I found a couple good spots that I am pretty sure will have something growing!

I hunted Friday for about two hours and found 4 of the yellow variety (usually found later than April 22) and about 30 of the earlier gray variety. This is NE Iowa that I am talking about so the time is getting closer for Southern MN. In virtually every case, there was a dead elm with bark peeling off. These elms do not have to be big. One was only about two inches in diameter. The wife and I had some Friday evening and plan to finish them up with a couple rib eyes on the grill this evening. What a treat!

My dad and brother went out today and found a whole bunch. They were only about 1-1.5" tall so only 3 came home tonight but they were still mighty tasty! This was about 8 miles south of Wadena.

I looked on Thursday when I fished in the rain all morning. No shrooms to be found but came across a huge area of watercress! Great stuff. Brought a bag home to eat up. Hope the morels turn on soon. This weather is tough.

For the past twenty years I skip fishing the opener (too many people for me), and look for morels. Usually find some but the past two openers have been kind of hard finding em. I was out in the rain and snow this morning stomping around my favorite spots. From the looks of things, I expect to fill my buckets in a few days if the sun comes out and the temp rises. This morning I could see dozens just waiting for the warmth to pop up. Can't wait!
