prop pitch and stabilizer fins

bwtrout

Question

My 20hp 4 stroke is on the edge of planning out my boat. The boat is 15', decked, and on the heavy side. I have the motor trimmed back all the way. It is so close to planning. I was looking at a 4 blade prop with greater pitch and adding stabilizer fins, but was told that probably wouldn't help from the shop I bought it from?

BW, Keep experimenting with weight distribution and trim angles. Something else you should be experimenting with is motor hight. Where is the cavatation plate is in relation to the hull is one of the most important adjustments you can do and its probably the most overlooked. After your done tweaking motor height then you can look into props. You'll need to know the RPMs at WOT. Once you've got that info then give Jay Soderbloom a call and he'll be able to give you your options. The stabilizer fin might give you that little bit of extra lift that you need to get on top and they're inexpensive but one of the last options I'd try.

The easiest and cheapest option is the stabaliser fin, although you will be drilling holes in the cavatation plate. I tried a four blade prop on my boat a couple of years ago and it was worse than the three blade.

good luck.

Like S.T. said call Jay Soderbloom he has a ton of knowledge in this area and can get you whatever you need at a great price. www.soderbloom.com It may be as simple as a bit more angle on your prop. A stabilizer finn may also work. A 20 horse on a heavy 14' may just be too little motor though. I had a 15 horse on my old 14' and it would plain ok with 1 guy but with 2 it was real hard to do and had to distribute weight differently. I went to a 25 horse and it tossed it up no problem.
