Is 6'2" too short?

Picked up a 6'2" musky rod - was a good deal. With the longer rod trend lately, is this just too short for a rod? It seems short as I usually fish with a 7' or 7'6". This would be used for heavier jerk baits only.

I dont know Cooter...seems very short to me but I guess it depends on your taste. My heavy Jerk Bait rod is 6'10..and I dont really care for it...because it seems so short. I just got a new jerk bait rod and went with one 7'6.

What the heck, you got a good deal on it....give it a try and see what ya think.....good luck cool.gif

Cooter,

I love my 6'2" rod! It is the best Jackpot rod I have found.

It might be short for some people, but I have been doing this for over 20 years and a 6' rod (or shorter) was very common for Jerkbaits. I caught fish and still do, with very few misses, so I have no need to change anything.

Rod length is totally a person to person choice. Use what you are comfortable with, not what someone else says you should use.

Good Luck!

Steve

My first muskie specific rod was a 6'2" extra heavy jerkbait rod. It has it's place, but once you use longer, more flexible rods you will see the advantage you get with length and flex. I do still have my 6'2", and I bring it when we are fishing out of smaller boats, then the shortness is an advantage.

First thing you want to keep in mind is how tall you are and how high your boats sits out of the water. I hate hitting the water when I am running big jerk baits. 6'2" is not to short for a jerk bait rod. I have a few 5'8" heavy rods that I love to use for jerk baits. It is all in what you fell comfortable with. I use my 6'2" heavy for 90% of all my baits. The only thing that it is not the best for is figure 8's. But I will give that up for a little more control on the jerk baits.

All in all it ends up being preference. Try them all and see what works best for you and your boat.

It's all about what works for you, the Freak and I have fished together many many times and he's a pretty big guy. If he can use a shorter rod I'm sure you can besides, Muskie guys used that size rod for years, before the trend to longer rods.

I'm sure you'll find some use for it, even if it isn't your every day jerkbait rod. Besides, a guy can't have to many rods, there's no such thing.

I use a 6 footer for jerk baits. Works great. Like the fact that it is shorter when palming the reel and snapping the tip of the rod towards the boat. Also the short length keeps the rod out of the water (long rod sticks down too far when standing on my bow). Would not use anything but a 6 footer for jerk baits. If I could only own one muskie rod(God forbid) it would be a 7 foot 2 length, however.
