Marcum versus Vex

Guest

Question

I fish with a FL8 and Aqua View. Question is what would i gain by switshing to a marcum? The majority of my fishing is for eyes and crappies.Would it be worth the cost to switch? Most of my fishing is no deeper than 50 ft and i use a 9-19 ducer.

To tell you the truth, you probally wont gain as much as you think you will, unless you fish suspended crappies or tight bottom hugging walleyes, then the Zoom will be nice. But if you use a camara then you can set that at the depth the fish are at and you should be fine.

I own an Lx-3 and i wouldn't fish without it and you couldnt take it from me with-out a fight, but have a caught more fish with it than i would have with an 18 or an 8? I don't know, i doubt it, but it is much easier to read, the screen is clearer and it doesnt flicker, also quiter and picks up no interference.

All you would be gaining is a clearer screen with no flicker and the moveable zoom, and better target seperation, but once your used to your vex I don't really know if it is worth the extra 400 bucks for those features.

I could be wrong but doesnt one of the Vex models have a zoom feature where you can zoom on the bottom half of the water column? Also most vexilars now have interference rejection so it is no problem. I have had my Vexilar for awhile now and it is great. The one thing i wish it had was a 10 ft setting. The shallowest setting is 20 ft.

I ran the 18 for a couple years before switching over to Marcum.

Like Lee said you get the better zoom feature and a clearer and in my opinion a clearer, easier display to read.

You also get supperior interferecne reduction.

But my favorite feature of the Marcum is the power. The marcum can shoot through ice better than the rest of the units. Its a big deal to me because I find fish first then drill holes. Not drill holes then look for fish.

Is that worth the extra money? If you get a couple hundred for your used unit its going to cost you a couple hundred for the LX3. I sold my 18 to a buddy for $200 and the $200 that I spent on my Marucm I think was worth it. Its just easier to find fish now.

Poutpro, the zoom on the Fl-18 is the bottom 6 feet of the water column. Like I said before you need to get a unit that will work for You. We can go around and around on this and it will never end. We were asked which is better and the people from FM responded with there opinions, that`s cool.

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
