Vikings: McCombs nearly fired Tice last season

Vikings' owner Red McCombs said during a Thursday conference call that he strongly considered the idea of firing head coach Mike Tice late last season in hopes that it would motivate wide receiver Randy Moss. "I gave serious thought to replacing Mike when Randy was coming off injury," McCombs told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "I was trying to think, 'How can I make this thing work where we get that spark?' I really didn't want to part company with Randy, but it had to happen. I know Randy can do a lot more than what we got out of him. In seven years, we had all kinds of opportunities and we couldn't cash in on them."

It's funny that McCombs would use the words "cash in" when his frugality has prevented the team from being serious contenders over the last few seasons. Even Moss expressed frustration with the lack of money the Texas billionaire spent on the team while addressing the Oakland media on Wednesday. Tice laughed off McCombs comments during a press conference held later Thursday and noted that he pondered quitting at times last season. McCombs has already agreed in principle to sell the team to Arizona businessman Reggie Fowler, so one has to wonder what his motivation is for creating even more havoc in the team's front office.

From the looks of it im not too sure that Tice and McCombs have really seen eye to eye at all. Because we heard the rumors before this that McCombs was on the brink of firing Tice. Though it never happened, it would seem iminent that if McCombs were to stay owner any longer than one more year that Tice would be gone. Hopefully what Red is doing is stiring things up and maybe lighting a fire under Tices rear.
