I have to say that I go to great effort to try and "balance" my bobbers but have found a very well balanced and limber "dead stick", one that is so well balanced you can see the fathead try and swim, is much more deadly on neutral walleyes than a balanced bobber. It seems to get me a lot of fish after dark, when the sundown bite is over. A guide on LOW shoulded it to me once, the walleye/sauger at that time of year WOULD NOT pull a bobber down but you could see them inhale a minnow and hold it, but they wouldn't move with it, so you watch the dead stick and when they inhale the bait you set the hook. Deadly if you try it and see it work. You can't appreciate it until you experience it over time. My .02.

who are those guy -

My brother is the guy who came up with the original Rock N Reel deadstick holder. I remember the first time I saw it, I had thoughts just like you are expressing.

Then he made me one, and we went fishing together. I was sold in 20 minutes, and have only used a bobber twice ice fishing since then. That was over 5 years ago.

If you have a rod with the right tip and balance, it is deadly on light biting 'eyes and crappies. Bobbers truly have their place, and I love the Ice Busters. Deadsticking has changed the way I ice fish, and for the better. I flat out catch more fish than I used to, and deadsticking is the reason.

I wish I could put it into words, but perhaps it is something you just have to experience.

Yes it is cheaper to just set a rod up with a bobber and a rod from the local hardware store. However if you spend allot of time fishing the cost of a good dead stick is worth it to me. I seldom use a bobber anymore since switching to deadsticking last year. I always use my rod rocker in my permanent house and my Rockn' Reels. Using these with a Thorne Bros deadstick can be a great set up. If you only fish a couple weekends out of the year then the cost probably isn't worth if for you but if you fish daily or even every weekend it really isn't that bad of a expense. Using deadsticking in conjuction with a jigging line is a great combination.

Fishing and equipment has evolved. Just like everything else. So I guess if you come up with a new way to use a rod and reel why not give it a name. Deadsticking. What else could it be called?

I also made a contraption that worked great. I just zip tied a key ring to the handle of my rod. Right at the balance point. Then I bent a coat hanger into a triangular base stand with a hook bent in the top to hang the key ring from. I gotta say it worked great. Even the slightest tick I could see movement. Up or down.

Grebe, if spearing gets hi-tech, what do you think that will be called?
