Power tilt and trim guage out of whack

Long Gray Line

Question

The trim guage on my Crestliner used to give me a pretty good idea of where the motor was (up/down) without having to look back. During the season last year, the trim guage got out of alignment with the tilt and now shows the motor "up" even when it's down all the way. Anything that I can do myself to get the guage showing right again??

Tks for the help

I had an old Evinrude that did the same thing. I would assume there is a mounting screw on the sending unit you could loosen and then adjust the sender. But while you are back there with the motor tilted up, just move the sender with your finger and see if the gauge works. Could be a bad sender…….

Back on the T&T unit itself, there should be a sender of some sorts. It's probably out of adjustment and with a few tweeks... You should be back in business. The gauge should be electric so remember to keep your switch "on" when doing your adjustments. ALSO.... Be careful when you're under the power head. A slight slip of the motor, and you lose a finger. Or worse!! shocked.gif

What kind of motor? On my 90 Johnson there's a finger tab that is moved up or down in relation to the motors movement. Maybe your motor has this finger tab too and it's bent or broken.

Follow the instructions from the guys above, if you want to test gauge, there are 3 posts on gauge, Ignition ( I ), Negative (G) and Signal (S). You can touch the S post with the negative wire, and see if needle moves.

If it doesn't that's a sign the gauge is bad.

Which color is it ? And for which motor, Mercury or OMC ?

Now we're talking.... Mine went wacky on my Yamaha 75... Turned out is was just out of adjustment. I wish the side of the garage my boat's in was a bit longer... I could get mine tilted up and see if we're talking about the same animal... Maybe I'll have to let the boat see the sun tomorrow and give mine a "look see". Keep me posted as to your own investigation.
