Mule Deer SE Montana

Recommended Posts

I have been going traveling in the South East corner on Montana lately, and have been seeing some of the largest herds of Muley there. I havn't hunted there but would be very interested in trying that. I have hunted Wibiau area a lot, but that is as far south. The Broadas to the Wyoming area seems very good looking to me. Suppose it is getting to be a pay to hunt area. CAJ

This is tru, most of it is being leased but there is still some quality hunts to be had. Just find some public land or block management, get a map and get as far from the roads as you can. remember, if you have been seeing muleys this winter there, thats because that Broadus country is where they migrate TO during the winter. You could be seeing deer that have migrated over a hundred miles to winter there.

That being said, there is some darn fine hunting to be had over there....and the crappie and pike fising in the Tounge Resevoir is the best in the stete....

I've hunted in the Ekalaka area with a lot of success over the years. Also went in the big (can't remember the name-Roosevelt or Custer) national forest west of Broadus a couple of times. Saw a lot of deer, but as we went a few weeks into the season it had been hammered pretty good already. Saw some hugongo bucks but only had doe tags.

Was in the Brodus area last week, and managed to make some contacts with some people there for this fall. Took a lot of coffee to get to know a couple old ranchers there, but very nice people. We saw a lot of nice deer along the roads in and out of the town. Biddle sounds like a good place to try to. Very nice people that run the store and post office there. CAJ

From what I've seen lately, in the Ekkalaca area, I don't think it would be to hard to get a Antelope in that area. There is a good chance to draw Mulie tags if you put in early next year. Get on the internet to the state of Montana an start the application early as you can. That area has a lot of state land to. CAJ

me and a group of guys apply for mulley tags every year. we hunt south of broadus by the powder river. We usally hun thte custer forest it is huge and there are alot of deer in there you just have to be paitent and look around. last 2 years we have drawn we have filled 11 out of 12 tags. this last year one guy passed up one to many bucks and came out short handed. but there are plenty of deer in the area we see hundreds when we go for drives around there.

Just ran across this post and thought I would reply. An old college friend and I have been hunting this area from Broadus along the Powder River all the way to the Wyoming border since 1968. Muleys naturally, but some good whitetail are there too. We have taken some monster bucks out of that area over the years. Also great for pheasants, turkeys, and grouse. Good hunts...good times. Will be there again this year.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
