Red River, Manitoba

Recommended Posts

The walleye run on the river this year was awesome, may large 10lbs+ being caught and boat loads of 2-5lbs, the best time is the fall sept. on to freeze up. then this is when the action is best. around christmas we caught piles of walleye and even the goldeye were slamming our jigs. does anyone from this board fish for cats or walleyes up here????? I live about 20min from lockport and love nothing better than throwing the boat in and working out on some 20lbs my biggest is 32lbs. smile.gif

Fishguy1, welcome! I'm just down the road from you. (Kenora) Your expertise of Lockport will be nice to have here.

There are several FMers that travel to Selkirk and fish for piggy cats and eyes. Wiskers, and I believe Ed Carlson knows the Red River of the south and north quite well...to name a couple.

Do you know Stu McKay? He's a moderator here, but I don't here much from him...Stu??

thanks for the welcome, you guys have a nice site here. i dont know stu personally but i do know of him from some of the local forums. i love to fish at lac dubonnet, only a hour away from home and great fishing.i fish from late fall through the winter for the green backs and we have landed several nice ones this year my biggest was about 29" but i did not have a tape and had to let it go. lots of guys have pulled out 13+lbs and we have had many 2lbs+. good eaters and nice and emerald green (lake fish).i have a shack on the red at sugar island but right now they are not bitting well (walleye) early season is fast paced action. we have been going out and fishing perch and northerns. you guys???

Get up to that area at least once a year, always looking for a new fishing spot. Have fished on Bird Lake, Lac du Bonnet near Tall Timbers Lodge, Pine Falls/Traverse, CrowDuck Lake, Wpg River at Pointe Du Bois and Eight Foot Falls. Got any ideas for a drive-in location near Winnipeg?

one of my favorite places to fish is lac dubonnett. launch in town at the docks right by Watertown marina. head down river towards pinawa, there is a nice area where the river narrows down and the water is forced through quickly.(by the power lines you cannot miss it. great spot fishing the eddies for walleye, you could catch all species here and i have pulled out quite a few master anglers here.if you continue up river there are lots of humps and feeder creeks that will deliver anytime. While jigging for walleye we always tie in to something very large but most times we break off as we use lighter line. i assume it is prob. big northerns or sturgeon as we have boated some nice 10lbs + northerns frequently. Nutimik lake and the winnipeg river system is also a favorite of mine especially if i can get my boat through the falls (sturgeon falls) if the water isn't to fast. then you can make your way up to slave falls generating station, there are some prime spots up here and the wilderness is thick so make sure your boat is in good condition as currents in areas are quick and you could get into trouble. best bet is get a map from canada map sales! if you need more info just let me know i would be glad to help.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
