The flourocarbon craze?

Florocarbon has similar reflective qualities as water. So underwater it is near invisiable. So, for any clear water applications it does help. Florocarbon also sinks, where mono and briad both float. So, you can get crankbaits to dive slightly deeper than on mono. Florocarbon has also proven to be quite abrasion resistant to rocks and such, which gives it an advantage as well... I still use mono for many things.. but I do have all mycrankbait rods and dropshot rods rigged with florocarbon!

Sami- For jig and pig, you are usually fishing 2 different things.. Open water deep stuff or tight heavy cover... On my tight ehavy cover flippin stick I have 50 lb Power Pro.. on my deep water I have 17LB P-line CXXX Clear. Which is not a florocarbon line... My only flro rods are Crankbaits and DropShot at this point.

JoJo- How goes? I dont think jeff and I are going to fish Team bass this year.. just gets to be too much driving...

As for the question.. yes floro can have some memory issues just like regular mono.. but I dont think its any worse.. but I dont think its any better either.. I have tried a few.. they are all pretty good.. I have P-Line Floroclear rigged on last year and plan on using it again this year.

Deitz..

i have 50lb Power Pro on my "scummin'" rod. that stuff is awesome. i have 17 lb on one of my jig rods and 20 lb on the other. do you think there is an advantage with going to a Florocarbon like Vanish?

Sammi- It depends.. I really think it depends on the application.. DO I think its the best for all applications to bass fishing.. No... I like it for Crankbaits.. I like it for Dropshot.. and for finess plastics like jig worms. I still have mono on my carolina rig rods and texas rig rods.. I still use mono for spinnerbaits... I still use mono on Jig and Pig, Unles its my heavy flipping stick. .then I use Braid. and I have braid on my slop rod and one of my carolina rig rods...

Interesting choices/good reading...

Deitz, just curious, why do you like Mono for Spinnerbaits? That seems like a bait that would work well with Braid. I know I like feeling every revolution of the blade with my PowerPro.

Hawg Tide- Here is my feeling, and what works for me may or may not work for others. On lures that impart thier own action(Such as spinnerbait, crankbait) I like a rod with a very soft tip and mono. That way when the fish goes to inhale the bait, they are able to, because of the stretch in the line and the limberness of the rod. In baits like that, often the fish sets the hook on itslelf so its not as important to have a rod with a lot of backbone for a hookset. With mono I can usually feel the blade turning just fine, I often set the hook if I feel the blade stop spinning.. if its just vegitation, no biggie because then you just cleared the bait...

With braid, and spinnerbaits, I feel you have a tendancy to overset the hook making the hole in the fishes mouth overly large, which in turn can make it easier or the fish to throw the bait. I also feel you can have a tendancy to pull the lure away from the fish because you are setting the hook as the fish is hitting.

Again, this is just how I fish and may not work for everybody.

i too use Power Pro (8/30) on my spinnerbait rod. the reason i do is because i fish the spinnerbaits and buzzbaits around a lot of bullrushes. i need the power and strength to horse the fish out if there. also when i impale my hook on a bullrush i can pull it off without having to go into the weeds with the boat and spook the fish.

i also love the fact that i can feel every little bump on the end of the line. it seems way more sensitive that the 17lb. trilene xt that i used before.

Good thinking sami.. uprooting a bulrush won't spook the fish at all. I agree with deitz on setting the hook on a spinnerbait though. One of my friends asked me if I give the fish the tip when I feel a strike. My reply was no, I just wait until I feel the fish, not the strike. What he was seeing was my rod loading before i set the hook.

I typically use 10 lb test on cranks to get proper depth control. What do you use for a flouro setup, and how much depth does it typically add to a crank?

TNFL-I have not done true tests.. but I know on a poes 300 will dive to about 13 feet deep on a long cast with 10 lb floro.. and I dont think it will get but a hair over 12 on 10 lb mono... you may think that those 11 inches arnt much.. but to me they are! I also will crank with 8 lb floro.

Sami,

I like using Power Pro on spinnerbaits in reeds & weeds too. I find that I can cut through weeds when I hook a big fish with braid. I really like using braid on my spinnerbait rods because I can also run my SB's a little deeper since the line diameter is smaller. I usually spend some time throwing SB’s into lilly pads & it’s usually just a matter of time until you feel a blade stop & end up setting the hook on a lilly pad stalk. I can usually rip out that pad & get everything back whereas with mono, I end up snapping off more when I try that. I personally prefer to pull out a single stalk of lilly pad rather than run over 30 yards of prime fishing habitat with my trolling motor.

I also have a spinnerbait rod with mono. I find that I do better on clear water with mono & SB's than with braid. This year, I bought some Vanish to try out (17 lb) & see how it does on SB's.

My $0.02,

FlipR70...

its great to hear that other fishermen, like yourself, have common sense too.

i just bought Vanish in 17 & 20. i plan to use the 20 for open water and deep weed line jiggin'. and i think i will use the 17 for my "senko" rod.
