It depends on what type of range you want. They make ones that go 2, 5, and 7 miles. Technically FRS radios are generally the 2 mile radius. The longer distance is called GMRS service. Keep in mind anything that reaches 5 miles or more (GMRS) you need a FCC license to legally operate it. I have Cobra's, 5 mile range. They work great. I can't remember exactly how much they were but I bought both in a package deal for maybe $70.00??

You can get a pair of battery-based Motorola 5 mile range radios for about $40 at some of the major retailers. Becuase they seem to frequently find the bottom of various lakes I tend to buy the cheaper radios! I have not had any reception or performance issues with the cheaper versions.

I like the battery based ones for trips to the BWCA etc.

Looking to replace my older Motorola radios. How long do the rechargable batteries last between charges? Can you also use AA bateries in these radios?

My Cobra's came with the rechargeable batteries. I probably got a total of 24 hours total of use out of them in a day and a half. I think that is pretty good. They are the same size as AAA batteries (4 of them) so if they went dead and didn't have time to recharge I can slip in regular batteries and continue on.
