Jiffy Model 30 Question??

Ruegs23

Question

I have Jiffy modl 30 that I have had for 15 years. Never had a problem with the thing. I keep the blades sharp, new gas and spark plug every year. This year the auger starts and sounds fine, but when I get to the bottom of the hole the auger catches every time. I have to lift up and ease down 3-4 times on every hole before I break through. It's drivivng me crazy!! Anybody have an idea on what is causing this? I just sharpened the the blade. PLEASE HELP!

Are you just sharpening the same blade yourself with a file? Sometimes you can screw the pitch up on the blade and it doesn't work quite right. If you have never put a new blade on I would try that they are pretty cheap in the whole mix of things.

I had the same problem 2 years ago . The answer is simple but embarasing. The blade is mounted on to the auger wrong. Without looking at my auger I am not sure if the blade mounts on below or above the bottom of the auger but I had it backwards for a few weeks and couldnt figure out what was wrong. If you google jiffy and go to service link it will show you a picture .

Hmmmm. I'll have to check mine as it does the exact same thing and come to think about it, I believe it started after I put a new blade on. I know I had my blade off for a while before I put the new one on and I very well could have just bolted it on incorrectly. It's been getting on my nerves too the way it catches every hole. Figured it was just the sharp blade! ha. You're right, I do feel stupid now....

By the way, I checked the site and it appears that the blade bolts onto the top (looking from the motor down the auger) and not underneath. I'll check mine tomorrow.

I had the same problem with mine, so I went and purchased the new chipper blade and now no more stopping!

It just rips the bottom of the hole like you would'nt believe!

They are about $10.00 more than the regular blade, but worth it! wink.gif

Same here. Checked mine and it was on the bottom rather than the top. Doh! Funny what a 1/4" of error will do. Hope it works better now. It always cut ice with ease except for the break-thru at the bottom and I always had to lift and give it a pop. Not to mention it probably isn't real easy on the drivetrain when it's going full bore and then catches hard....

Thanks.

Got my first opportunity to try out the auger after flipping the blade around and it really zips through 2' of ice and finishes the hole without hanging up. It was so much fun I had to drill a bunch more. heh heh. Like a new auger again.

Thanks for the tip on the tip! Funny how something so simple can make such a difference. grin.gif

I used my Jiffy this weekend for the first time after moving the blade from the bottom to the top. I almost dropped the auger it cut through the bottom of the ice so smoothly I didn't even know it was happening. I had also sharpened the blades. It has hung up on the bottom for years, either it came from the factory wrong, or more likely I switched it the very first time I took it off, then got used to it that way. Thanks!!!

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
