msm1018
I am going up to Canada for a fishing trip this summer with a few friends and I was wondering about gear ratios on baitcasters, what is the difference in 6:3:1 and 4:3:1, I do not want personal favorites, I just want retrieval speed difference. Also what is the real big difference in mono and flouro, I normally use berkley Vanish, and I'm thinking of the new transition vanish, but I would like to know what the pro/cons are. thanks. Deitz Dittrich
A 6.3-1 reel will reel in more line per handle turn than a 4.3-1. However, the 4.3-1 will have more power than a 6.3-1. Another words, for bigger heavier fish a lower gear ratio reel is often better.. in the bass fishing that I do.. I use the lower gear ratio reels for doing spinnerbait and crankbaits.. its a lot less fatigue even though you have to turn the handle more times, its less work(kinda like a come along type deal)...For baits where you really only need to pick up the slack.. like jigs and such.. I go with the higher gear ratio...Florocarbon tends to be a tad bit stiffer than mono, but is more abrasion resistant, and a lot more invisable in water. I like it for fishing around rocks and such and in ultra clear water...If this was unclear, let me know and I will try harder.

Dan Wood
Quote:what is the difference in 6:3:1 and 4:3:1 The 6.3:1 ratio turns the spool 6.3 times per 1 revolution of the handle, the 4.3:1 turns the spool 4.3 times. As Dietz mentioned, the lower gear ratio will have more power (commonly used for heavier crankbaits). Quote:Also what is the real big difference in mono and flouro Flourocarbon is made to basically be invisible in water by closely replicating the refraction index of water. It is less visible than mono in water and it sinks, unlike mono which floats.
