FOOTDOC
I sincerely appreciate and enjoy the chance to go to LOTW each year to ice fish. I always use a resort and a resort ice house. This year, I was chatting with a fellow who had a portable one man shelter. I have the same unit here at home. He was telling me he has to buy a permit to take his portable out on the ice. After asking at the local bait stores, I was surprised to see you needed a permit for a portable ice house. I think it was around $19 for a week if you are from out of state. I may be naive but do other states charge this?! We don't have any fee YET here in Indiana. How many more seasons do you think it will be befor the MDNR requires me to buy a temporary pass for my boat in the summer months. Personally, I think this is sticking it to the sportsman a bit too much. It is one thing to buy a license but a permit for a shelter seems a bit much. Gosh, do I need a permit to sit on a bucket? How about to bring out my own auger? Just kidding, but I do find it interesting?!
Freemo
You better just move to Minnesota that way you will only have to pay $12.50 for the entire year.
dkhntr
I am sure it's the same reason we need to license our boats. If you look at it that way, your shanty is your boat. OR If it falls through the ice they know who to fine, OR it just plain helps the DNR with funding. You like fish in the lake, it helps pay stocking. kslipsinker
The original fee was to track owners so the MDNR could monitor removal of shelters. In the old days people used to leave them or torch them on the lakes. Too many people take the easy way instead of the responsible way.
