i have had a zercom colorpoint for the last few years nd have never really been able to figure out whether or not it will pick up smaller lures? i can pick up lures like jigging raps but i cant pick up nething smaller such as smaller jigs n minnows or jigging spoons... i turn up the gain but all the does is make the screen harder to decipher what i junk nd what is ligit... n suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated since i am begging to become frusterated...

First off, welcome to FishingMinnesota.com, hopefully someone will have some information for you... Without seeing your unit in action its really hard to say. A few things it could be..

•are you sure your traceducer is level?

•Is your trance ducer scratched on the bottom?

•is your battery up to snuff?

You should be able to read small lures with your unit.

went out tonite on nest n only caught 1 nice crappie... i put the transducer about a foot past the ice and no difference, i hang the transducer straight down from the arm so im thinking thats not it... i bought a battery last year an believe its in good condition... the transducer seems to have a grainy sort of bottom, as in not a smooth, but i can really only see maybe a few scratches?? will only a few effect it? or how much does a new transducer cost?

I don't have any technical answers for your problem, but I have used my Colorpoint for several years until upgrading to a Marcum LX-3 this year, and I assure you it will pick up targets as small as air bubbles when working properly. I would suggest contacting Humminbird since I believe they bought out Zercom. A friend of mine had the same problem with his after hundreds of hours of use and they told him that they could repair it.

No, MarCum is not Zercom. We did not buy Zercom nor do we service Zercom. Please call Techsonic at 1-800-633-2576 regarding Zercom products

Hey Iceismine, I may be able to help you out. I just got my hands on a bunch of various Zercom transducers and other parts. Even a working ColorPoint unit we could use to test yours against. Where are you located? I'm in Blaine. If you are near I'd have no problem meeting up with you and trying a few transducers on your unit to see if that helps. E-mail me at edjwendt at juno dot com if you are interested. Ed.

Iceismine,

Welcome to the colorpoint world. I too own one, and what you are explaining fits my unit to a tee. I have had this problem since the day I bought mine as well. I have a new battery, even on my second Transducer and still the same problems. My transducer is the same as yours kinda grainy on the bottom. That has nothing to do with it. Actually some of the Vexilar models are like that, only they work. AS far as Humminbird. I went that route a couple weeks ago as well. They said they will not service that unit, it is o the DO NOT SERVICE list. So to put it in a few words we are screwed! I have been battling my unit for a few years now. And am saving my money. I will be buying a Vexilar or Marcum next year. ColorPoints simply are junk. I can pick up a jigging rap, but even have trouble with certain spoons. This weekend while fishing next to my cousing and his Vexilar for Pan fish. He had his Gain set at 2 and could pick his small Ice Jig up. I had mine set at like 8 and could barely pick it up. And with it so high you mis other stuff like FISH that are close to the bottom.

Never had any problems picking up lures with mine, in fact I have picked up my line about 1/2 the way down several times. One thing I have experienced however is my display getting very bright and distorting every so often but it usually only lasts for a few seconds and self corrects.
