Shark Z43 or Z51?

tashit

Question

After drilling a bunch of holes yesterday through 13+ inches of ice with the trusty hand auger, I decided it's time for a power auger. I've been looking for awhile and I'm pretty much set on the Shark but I don't know if I want the Z43 or Z51. I've read a lot here on the sharks in general, but I can't seem to find much comparing the two. Is the 43 enough for an 8" or 9"? I was leaning towards the 9" so I thought the 51 might be better but now I'm starting to think an 8" would be fine. I would like it to cut fast but I think weight is more of an issue to me. Is the 20% increase in displacement/hp worth the increase in price and weight?

I had the same thing happen to me, kindof. When I first got mine it ran great right away and I cut about 7 holes just fine. After that though it would start just fine but it would die as soon as I started drilling. So I tried the cap thing but that didn't work (tried loosening it to the point it leaked also). So I called them up and they only came up with the cap thing. So I figured my cap was defective or something. So I brought it back to where I bought it and they gave me a new cap. Now it works great. Hopefully thats all it is for you too.

Yeah on my first auger that had a bad carburator the gas cap was also bad. I could tell it wouldnt breath b/c the gas tank would be sucked in after a few holes.

On my new auger now the gas will actually leak out of when its layed with the gas tank down. I could tell there was a big difference there.

I still dont like the fact that it leaks. My dad has last years model and it has the same type of cap (just different design) and his is perfect, it lets air in and no gas out. But I cant really complain, my auger starts on the first pull.

I thought I would update you guys that have been helping me out. I called Ardisam last week a couple times and they ended up sending me a new carburetor. It came Friday but I wasn't home so I got it on Monday. I put it in and it started up right away and idled just fine. Last night I walked down to the lake and drilled a couple holes. It worked great besides killing after the first hole. I am almost positive that this is because it is idling too low however. It was dark and I only had a flashlight so it was tough to adjust the screws but I feel safe saying that it's fixed. This weekend when I'm out during the daylight I will drill some holes and adjust the idle and fuel screws to get the best performance. Thank you guys for your help and thank you Ardisam for helping me get my auger fixed rather painlessly. It looks like I'm going to be another happy Shark owner. smile.gif

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
